WorldWiseTrade Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 Any suggestions on a good fuel stop location with an airport restaurant serving good food? Flying from FL to MA this week in my Bravo. Also, any interesting airports and destinations, New England, Canada Maritimes, etc. Thanks in advance! Quote
Danb Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 If you have time slip over to niagra falls Kiag cool sights and the Fbo has nice folks... Quote
neilpilot Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 KMVY Martha's Vineyard has a good restaurant adjacent to the FBO, and bus service from the airport goes all over the island. Quote
carusoam Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 26N Ocean City, NJ... Classic board walk, hot dogs, ice cream, gelato, pizza, espresso, gelato, taffy... Good exercise, did I say they have gelato and espresso to go with that? Don't forget to consider safety equipment that is good for flying over water. Wear comfy walking shoes.... For a more formal dinner, consider Atlantic City KACY, nice hotels, casinos, restaurants, shows and Class C?airport and ground transportation. Best regards, -a- Going with Neil's suggestion above, once on the ground, check out Oak Bluffs for lunch, beach, walking, and bike rentals. Forgot the fuel part of the question. Central Jersey 47N is rumored to have lowest cost avgas in NJ. Let me know if you need any follow-up. Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted June 1, 2014 Report Posted June 1, 2014 Transportation museum in Owl's Head, ME is worth a visit. But, from where in Fl and to where in Ma. Panhandle vs Jacksonville, Cape vs Berkshires. Makes a lot of difference in best route and interesting stops. In one case west of DC and in other east of DC. Owl's Head vs Old Rhinebeck. In either case probably best go to Wings web site and take "Navigating the New DC ADIZ" course, and carry certificate of completion . My small version of permenant Certificate is in my wallet right next to my pilot license. To the east is pretty straightforward, to the west watch out for Camp David TFRs. Quote
Marauder Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 39N Ocean City, NJ... Let me know if you need any follow-up. I think Anthony meant 26N. Princeton is 39N -- not a bad stop if you want to see historic Princeton University. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote
carusoam Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 Darn memory issues... If anyone wants to visit Princeton University. 39N is your stop. Rides can be made available for the right price. I went and fixed the first post, I hope.. Thanks Chris, -a- 1 Quote
pinerunner Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 Sanford (KSFM) in Maine has a great little breakfast and lunch restaurant. Provincetown, MA (KPVC) is right on the beach out at the end of the Cape. If you throw in a folding bicycle I think they have trails. I haven't gone there but Kitty Hawk, NC has an airport and fly-in museum devoted to the Wright brothers; not in the NE but I'd like to know more about it. Quote
Seth Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 GED - Georgetown Delaware. It's on the coast, has a restaurant on the field, and a discount on fuel if you eat at the restaurant. The restaurant is fine. Plus, if you fill out the forms after you top off and mail them in, you get a rebate on the fuel tax. Probably the least expensive full service fuel (beats most self service) in the region after the food and tax discounts. Nothing much to do there, though there is a B-25 based on the field as well as a Yak that sometimes zooms around. No tower, very friendly, nice runways. The field is where a lot of larger jets are rehabbed for other work (new interiors for 737s, etc . . .). KWWD - Cape May NJ On the opposite side of the Delaware bay from GED is Cape May, NJ. I've never been but have heard great things. They have a diner on the field (you'll need to research times) as well as a NAS Museum on the field. KCGE - Cambridge, MD - Another good restaurant I've been to - open at more hours than Cape May. Kay's at the Airport (restaurant) is a favorite of many pilots. Nice runway, with Kay's at the West end. There is a Hilton resort just a few miles away and if I recall you can call Hilton and they'll come pick you up if you want a full services hotel as an overnight. So, three airports in the mid Atlantic with fuel. They are all on the East side of the SFRA where you won't actually fly in the SFRA. All depends on where you want to stop for food timing wise. WWD is the most north, then GED in the middle, and CGE to the South. Also, FDK - Frederick, home of AOPA has a restaurant on the field and lower self serve fuel prices for the region. It's just north of DC airspace just outside the SFRA - there is a tower there as well. All depends on how you want to get around the SFRA. -Seth Quote
pinerunner Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 For fuel prices don't you use airnav.com? When I was passing through Virginia Wakefield (AKQ) had best gas deal near my route. It was do-it yourself with credit card and easy and convenient with a new building with rest rooms, conference rooms, etc.. Not attended but right on the highway so police can keep eye on it easy. Municipal run affair. There was a nice southern restaurant a short walk down the highway from Wakefield. I found it through airnav.com. Near New York city Central Jersey Regional (47N) is often the cheapest gas around. Gas fine, more people, an older airport. 47N is close to NYC TSA and was a bit harder to find by pilotage (stuff around there in Jersey all kind of looks the same). If you have GPS everything is easy. I like airnav.com for checking gas prices. If you wanted to do the Skyline route through NYC, Central Jersey would be a great jumping off point. Quote

From the airport to the museum is a short walk, but into town for food on a hot summer day is a long, long way. We ended up at Dairy Queen, sitting at picnic tables outside because there is no "inside" other than the kitchen! Great monument, nice indoor and outdoor displays, a great trip. Just be prepared for distant food. Fuel is available at nearby airports; I forget the code but Dare County is on an island in the sound with two crossing runways. Both are breezy, after all, that's why the Wrights went there for initial flights. Quote
John Pleisse Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 I was going to suggest nearly all of Seth's picks, he beat me to them. I would only add there is a small aircraft museum at KGED (Georgetown, DE) Also, Fredericksburg, VA is fun. The Shannon Aviation Museum is really neat. http://www.eaa231.org/Museum/VAMS.htm 1 Quote
Steve65E-NC Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 The Williamsburg, VA area is worth a visit. Williamsburg, Yorktown town and battlefield, Mariners Museum in Newport News (home of the Moniter recovery and other neat stuff). The little airport at Williamsburg (JGG) used to have a nice restaurant and could arrange rental cars etc. Breakfast in the formal dining room at Williamsburg Inn, while expensive, is worth the price. Bob_Belville Posted June 3, 2014 Report Posted June 3, 2014 I've stopped on the Eastern Shore several time flying between NC & ME. KSBY one time but MOAs were hot and ATC routed me around them. I've used KMFV several times. Fast in and out, self service fuel at good price, and perfect fix from which to get IFR routing over JFK without detours. No restaurant at airport but if you wanted to stay an hour or two the town of Melfa and the quaint Onancock is nearly. The attendants were friendly. Caution, if it's a blustery day the wind is likely to be across the single runway 3/21. Quote

Yes...worth the high landing fees and high FBO fees. Quote
