So as I have become more proficiant at operating my 20D I am now looking into the operation of the GPS. We have a STEC40 that works great with the heading bug and the nav. I have not tried to use the ARNAV GPS  but my wife who loves to push buttons and handles much of my navigation with the Garmin 296 wants me to get the ARNAV to work.  I dont think the unit is supported any more. I found an OM on the net.  Any info would be helpful. its not a big deal but if I can get it to work and its slaved to the STEC then every thing on the plane would be working.

which is cool

I have several that were pulled from aircraft and still work, the databases were still available a couple of yrs ago but i'm not sure if you can still get them. there is an internal battery that fails and will give you a warning on start up but doesn't prevent the unit from working, and i believe the battery is easy to change. if you need pices parts let me know.

BTW, welcome to the 19th century   ;)

Brian's approach is probably the best to keep what you have working. Here is what I found on the web about them:

Comments Sagem Avionics (who purchased ARNAV) terminated factory support of the STAR 5000 at the end of 2010. As a result, we can no longer recommend this GPS.

With an STEC 40 already in the panel, you may want to consider seeing if the STEC GPSS module will work with the ARNAV. That would really put some renewed life into the ARNAV. The STEC GPSS module is ST-901

Thanks Brian,  to be truthful I'm stuck in the 20th century. The G296 works great as well as my Foreflight app on the IPAD.  This Mooney is 50 years old this year and it is a wonderful machine. we flew out over the pacific yesterday looking for whales. none sighted but I was getting 150Knots indicated at 4500ft 26in mp. No BS.  I know the ARNAV is out dated but it might be fun to get it to work.

i had an FMS5000 Loran and it worked great till someone decided to turn off the signal.

The Star 5000 is a slide in replacement to the FMS 5000 and is a great GPS ( no map)

you cannot update the database anymore, and it is not supported by Sagem anymore. but those units are very sturdy and make a great VFR GPS.

the internal battery is very easy to change even if you are just OK at soldering.

You probably can hook it one way or the other to an AP, but , IMHO, not worth the $$$ and paperwork.

You may want to check whether the install will allow you to file /G.

I have a 62 C model so i know what you mean about keeping what works, when i fist bought my plane 9 yrs ago I redid the instrument panel. I had a couple of Star 5000's that I had acquired and thought about installing but i got a great deal on a garmin 430 unit so i put the garmin in and because of lack of space left the Arnav out. every once in a while i will fire one up just to see if it still works, but have not found a real use for them.

I'm assuming by your speeds that you have a converted "D"

I hear you on the "classic" avionics. Like OR75 below, I resurrected an STS LORAN that I got a year or so usage before the first portable Garmin GPS hit the market.
