My wife got me the new Garmin D2 pilot watch. It's amazing what those guys can put on your wrist today. You can download your flight plan into it, it has nearest airport feature, waypoints, Direct To feature, HSI, CDI, altimeter with variable barometric setup, groundspeed, etc. I will definitely use it for my fuel tanks switching as it has a vibrating time alerts. I will try to use it for my gear down reminder as it has a minimum ( and maximum, descent and ascent) altitude vibrating warning alert. It talks directly to Garmin Pilot that I am using and it can control the new Garmin VIRB camera that I will get soon,  I hope.

Does anybody has any experience with it or any tips for using it?

Thank you.

D2 or Direct to, $449.00 at Garmin web site.

Great back-up technology.

Still waiting for Chuck Yeager's comments before purchase.

I know his comments about the AOA indicator was not favorable.

My wife bought me one for my birthday! Unfortunately I have not received it, as they are having availability issues with the watch in Europe. Hope to get it in the next weeks. I am glad to hear you like. I am also quite excited to check it put....

Keep an eye on it's power usage...

I have an older runner's version that uses up it's battery in a day if you leave the GPS on...

Plenty for a flight, but if you use it for a weekend continuously, it could run out of juice...

Report how well you can use it.

Best regards,

Reminds me of a joke.  Pilot sitting in a bar, keeps looking at his watch and then smiling at a good looking lady at the other end of the bar.  Finally the lady comes over and asks why he keep looking at his watch and smiling at her.   He tells her that he is a naval aviator and that his watch is the latest in technology and that it provides him information about his surroundings.  She ask what is it telling him.  He says for example it tells me you are not wearing any panties.  She says well I most certainly am wearing panties.  The pilot looks at his watch and says " ah, damn things an hour fast".

I have a Garmin golf watch. (Provides GPS position showing front/middle/back of green). I like it, but concur that battery life with GPS on is an issue. I can get Maybe 27 holes out of it without a recharge. The GPS really sucks the battery down. That would be my nmber one issue with the D2....and that the D3 with make it obsolete in 12 months...followed by the D4 :)

Those D3 and D4 are probably sitting on the shelf somewhere in China already. But I am used to it. My job is to convince our clients to drop $100Ks to the automation systems that we have installed two years ago and they are all of the sudden obsolete.

Pilot joke=awesome!!

The book calls for 4-5 hours of battery life in GPS mode. And if I remember correctly it said 3-4 weeks battery life with gps disabled. I'll have to look at it again.

I have got it on Jan 16th and charged it fully. It still has 50% battery left. I have played with the watch and use GPS for short period of time. I am going to fly today and leave the GPS on. I will report back how long it lasted.

I finally got mine on Saturday. I charged fully charged it up, and it just died an hour ago. I played around with it last weekend and took it on a one hour flight. I flew twice so far this week and challenged it to find the satellites. That shurely gave the battery a "go". It is recharging now and I will report back how long it lasts after the first full recharge. Usually the battery needs a few cycles to develop endurance.

I really like the watch, but during my flight (no autopilot, so so weather, VFR, busy airspace) I really didn't make use of it. I tjought I turned the timer on before T/O to remind me to switch tanks, but it turned out I activated the stopwatch ;-) Guess I will need a little more practice. Over the weekend I plane to fly a little CC with some longer kegs, that should give me some time to play with it.

But my initial impression is - pretty cool device!

Is that code...Dick?

If your battery lasts more than 4 hours you are supposed to seek immediate medical attention . . .
