In the Wish I had waited department...

Garmin has added attitude display to a portable ADS-B in receiver that works with its Garmin Pilot application for iOS and Android portable device applications. The GDL 39 3D is, according to Garmin, "a portable ADS-B and GPS receiver which adds simultaneous display of aircraft attitude information (pitch and roll), alongside rich, interactive mapping, traffic, and weather ...." It's an upgrade of the GDL 39 and gives a full moving map display along with all the basic flight instruments on a split screen display on the portable device.

The device sells for $849 ($899 with a battery) and is available now. Garmin CEO Carl Wolf said the device is part of its plan to help pilots transition to the ADS-B environment that will be mandatory in most controlled airspace in six years. "... We’re devoted to educating the pilot community. Our full line-up of portable and certified ADS-B products, along with our comprehensive ADS-B Academy website, support Garmin’s commitment to making the ADS-B transition easy and affordable for all aircraft owners.”

I've noticed that there is still a strong market for the original Stratus units even though the Stratus 2 adds the Pitch and Roll info. I assume the there will be a similar demand for the GDL 39's. Not to expensive to sell and upgrade.

Scott -- I bought a GDL-39 a few months back as well. I'm not hyped on the AI feature, but the remote box version is something I would have considered.

I bought one a few months ago as well and don't care about the AI either. But I think the remote box for the original was available when I bought mine - I think.....

I have Xavion on an iPhone, except that it can't get ADS-B wx info from the GDL-39 which would make it even more powerful in an emergency. Perhaps they should give us an upgrade path from the GDL-39 to the 3D version.

Here is the Stratus App That works with the Status 2. I've found it works quit well.  It updates continuously and smoothly.  I let it run on an old iphone that I don't use anymore and keep foreflight up on the Ipad. I hope that at some point foreflight will integrate it into their program and allow split screens.

I know that the attitude information displayed using this device along with the Garmin Pilot app would be no substitute for a backup AI in the panel, but isn't it better than nothing should things go south in actual conditions?

Some of us already have the Xavion that works off of the iPad's sensors. I think if it is your last resort, then you're right... Better than nothing.

Aviation Consumer did a report on the available portable AI's a few months ago and they were not very complimentary about the accuracy of the AI for any of them.  Not even for backup.

I have a feeling that the garmin boys and girls did this right as they tend to do with their products. I'm willing to bet the hardware/software is straight out their 3GX...
