Commercial Travel Fare Increases Projected

There was a segment on the news tonight saying that commercial air travel prices will be up an alarming 17% by Thanksgiving. They went on to say that it would be up 51% by Christmas. This makes me really appreciate the fact that we can fuel up and go at will. We can only hope that this increase would not have any impact on our AVGas.   A 51% increase is huge  .

 

I've got nothing but love for my Mooney......zooooooooooooooooooooom and sip, sip, sip.

Um..Did not say, but I would say the outstanding job our head government is doing is not helping. Fox News Memphis just did a quick clip saying buy your tickets NOW before the increase into the holidays etc..

With that said, our Mooney's still compete with airline prices.

Maybe we can get more people interested in flying themselves if commercial gets expensive enough.  Does anyone have any information on the cost ratio of commercial vs private back in the 60' and 70' when GA was "thriving"?

 

I know if I have at lest one other in the plane I can generally fair better than flying commercial and if the route is right I can beat commercial or at lest not be that far behind them.

I was flying a Mooney 250 hours a year in the 70s & 80s. I think I remember that I could fly for what an airline ticket costs, even alone. Of course 100/130 was under $2.

That's a pretty elitist notion- driving down air traffic by pricing the general public out of it would only hurt the country economically, I think.

If only wishing made it so. But, I think we're heading there anyway whether or not I'm thought of as "elitist". Official lies statistics still claim inflation is ~2%. Anyone actually experiencing 2% inflation? Heh. Ticket prices will have to go up. And since wages for the "common man" aren't keeping pace, they'll increasingly be priced out.

Well, in case no one has noticed, AvGas was in the 4.30 range not so very long ago, and now I am finding 6 something practically everywhere.

This is (mostly) what our Federal Reserve wants. They -want- inflation. They're getting it. I have to do nothing but stand by and enjoy.

As far as a commercial flight vs a Mooney:    I think it depends a lot on where you go and when you plan on going.   For example, if I decided to go from Austin Tx to Longview Tx to visit Don Maxwell, commercial round trip air tickets are $560.  Provided I can operate my Mooney for under $180 per hour, I can fly there by myself for less.   And there is no extra cost to take my wife.

 

On the other hand, I flew commercial from Austin to Bonaire (Island in the Caribbean)  (KAUS->TNCB) for $600.  There is no way my Mooney can touch that, even if stuffed with 4 people.

If it's any indication of their reliability in reporting and somewhat off topic they also reported that to earn a "F" in Memphis City Schools you now only need to have a GPA average of 47 to pass. As a business owner I concur with the educational report since I have not had very many "Rocket Scientists" apply for jobs lately. I think if you can spell a first name you get a 47.  It was a 70 back in my days. No I did not go to school in Memphis.. Go University of Nebraska and University of New Hampshire

I actually knew all this about her, and it's quite impressive. But the question remains, why does she "dummy down"?  Clearly with her education she must be able to add on the fly.

 

Here is another clip of her talking about the "Cash for Clunkers" program of yore. She stated that she did her own "crack" research and found that that only two cars were sold as a result of the program in her home state. The truth is, 2% of all cars sold in the state participated in the program - not two purchases.

1. In my experience, many otherwise well educated and intelligent people have a block when it comes to math. I have no idea if she's one of those.

2. I suppose on-air talent is mostly reading from teleprompters. Catching stupid stuff written by others while looking good and hitting your mark is probably challenging.

 

I'm not defending her, I assume you're asking a sincere question. I doubt Media Matters is interested in being fair and balanced. Irony intended.
