Ovation or 252 owners in NorCal?

Hi all,

 

I've been toying with the idea of moving to either a 252 or Ovation. If anyone in Northern California has either a 252 or Ovation and can spare the time to talk about ownership of these planes and take me flying (fuel and lunch/dinner included!) I'd really appreciate it.

I'm hangared at Petaluma (o69 - always sounds like something I used to say to an old girlfriend :o) so I'm a short flight to NorCal airports to get together.

PM me if you can "help a brother out".

Currently investigating the possibilty of selling the 252 for an Ovation, Bravo or an Acclaim even. But taking all things in to account the 252 is pretty competitive still. Concerning the cabin size: I'm 6'8" and I fit easily in the front of the 252 and somewhat less easily in the back. I have spent up to four hours on end there without any (lasting) discomfort :D. The turbo gives great climb performance, I guess I'll miss that if trading up for an Ovation especially after passing FL100.

 

I'd love to fly out and help you decide, but it's a bit out of my way.  :rolleyes:

The O has some magic technology to lower the relative height of the panel.

They call it a seat height adjustment!

If you lower the panel you would be looking at the back of the engine block.

Overall the cabin furniture is as adjustable as possible crank adjustments for the height and seat back angle are pretty nice.

The extra pair of cylinders is nice as well. It helps move the fan noise further away from the ears.

Overall, adjust the seat, adjust the pedals (magic spacers), use the magic in ear headset, and fly comfortably fast!

Yeah - I'm sure I can make it work. The Ovation sounds like one heck of an airplane!

Things you may want to consider when looking at N/A long bodies...

Eagles are the base model. They were built with minimalism in mind. Each one has been upgraded over time.

Ovations came fully loaded and were called Special Edition or SE for short.

First Os were built in '94, before Garmin became the sole supplier of WAAS nav boxes. Again be looking for the upgrades.

O2 and TKS are the only options that were not included . Both would be nice if you are to fly for business.

Eagles and Ovations can be upgrade to 03 power status. The 310 HP IO550(n) with 3 blade, TopProp, turning 2700 rpm is the ideal way to get off the ground.

A fare amount of early Os are being updated to the 310HP set-up. That and 100 gallons of navgas will go pretty far and fast!

Lower HP engines, 2 blade props and small fuel tanks are the downside of the un-modified Eagles.

Interest rates aren't going lower anymore.

If you are able, it is worth it!

Thanks for the info. I've read a lot about Ovations(actually all Mooney models).

Definitely an Ovation and not an Eagle.

I would really like the 310 HP upgrade but there aren't that many o1's or o2's that have it. It's ~ $20K now so unless I get a plane that needs an engine I doubt I'll have that.

Definitely want a 3 blade prop as a prominent Mooney sales person called the 2 blade a "ground hugger". This does not sound pleasant.

Oxygen is a must - I'm tired of dealing with a portable bottle.

Garmin 430/530 WAAS, King KFC150/KAP150, modern strikefinder, JPI 700 or better, good history and all logs, good P&I...blah blah blah.......

TKS - I won't spend time in ice and I don't want the speed penalty so I do not want TKS.

I know what I want, I just have to find the right plane (and maybe someone that will take my 201 in trade unless I find someone to buy it before I find my Ovation).

I did a couple of months ago about a 252 but I don't think I want to deal with a turbocharged engine.

There are quite a few Ovations for sale on Controller/ASO/Trade-a-plane as well as other sites like Jimmy/David, Strategic, etc. I just need to put myself on the firing line and do it!

I've flown an Eagle but I want to fly an Ovation. I know they're not much (if any) different flying but I still want to fly one.

Don't forget the cold O2 option- as in air conditioning. Very nice, especially in the south.
