201er Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 How many of you have flown your Mooney internationally? Any interesting experiences or lessons? Quote
jetdriven Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Went to Canada two years ago. No big deal, really. Just file the eAPIS and CANPASS is nice to have. Avgas is hellishly expensive up there, and it's not easy tankering fuel in a 54 gallon airplane. Quote

jlunseth Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Bahamas three times on purpose, Canada once not meaning too. It is not at all difficult. The biggest issue in going to the Bahamas is a matter of timing. Flight is prohibited after sunset, and in many places it is necessary to clear customs by 4:30 or 5, when they close. The problem of clearing customs usually means a night over in FL at Ft. Pierce (where you pick up your required vests and life raft), and departure the next morning. My last time there I went to Nassau where customs is open until 11, got great treatment and was out of Nassau in time to land at my destination at sunset. Get your CBP sticker and eAPIS account. Always check to make sure your fuel stop has fuel before you go. Just because it is on the chart does not mean anything in the Bahamas. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Bahamas, which is a PITA. And now that they imposed new fees, no longer feasible for lunch. Quote

Joe Zuffoletto Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Canada and Mexico for me. I fly to Cabo a couple times a year these days. Quote

carusoam Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 I always wanted to... Used to drive to Montreal annually, before kids. 12 hour drive. Tried to fly to Toronto, once. Came up short because of IMC. Low clouds generated by the Lakes. I was not IFR rated. Rental car finished the trip. M20C with all four seats filled... Then I got a handy dandy Ovation and a nifty IR. Ready to start traveling... Then a few other things had gotten me side tracked. I'm looking forward to getting back on the line. The Bahamas is looking better every year. Cuba is not that far in the future, is it? Best regards, -a- Quote
Bennett Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Flew across Cuba going and coming from the Cayman Islands. Beautiful from the air. 1 Quote
Awful_Charlie Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Bit of a cheeky reply for me. I live in Switzerland, keep the aircraft just over the border in France. For those people who like to fly big W..I..D..E circuits, downwind in in Germany, and base or crosswind is in Switzerland! Quote
JBahnsen Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 Hello Guys, I have done a fair bit of international flying in mooneys over the years. 2002/03 RTW in a 1988 M20J (VH-JDY) 2009 Ovation from Texas to UK, lots of europe flying (N371AG) 2010 UK to Singapore, spend the next two years flying around Malaysia/Thailand(N371AG) 2012 Singapore to Canada (N371AG) Happy to provide any assistance to those planning international trips. yvesg Posted August 16, 2013 Report Posted August 16, 2013 http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/ainalerts/2013-07-09/bahamas-increases-private-aviation-costs I was planning flying to the Bahamas eventually but these fees are completely changing my plans. I do not encourage greed...ever. Yves 1 Quote

yvesg Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 I am so upset, I did some more research... found this: http://www.aopa.org/News-and-Video/All-News/2013/July/25/Decision-pending-on-Bahamas-customs-fee.aspx Yves Quote
OR75 Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 to be honest, if i was planning a trip to the Bahamas, it would not be the $50 fee that would break the deal. the island is very expensive to visit anyway. however, i am sure the island will loose some of the Floridians who used to visit the island for that $100 hamburger or weekend hop. Ned Gravel Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 Full international for me. I fly to the US all the time. But since that is not one of the options - I guess it wasn't really considered. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted August 17, 2013 Report Posted August 17, 2013 however, i am sure the island will loose some of the Floridians who used to visit the island for that $100 hamburger or weekend hop. Me being one of them. I already had a problem with the new $25 per person departure tax and this only exacerbates things. Quote
