engine cardboard boxes

So my mechanic has secured the engine to a pallet but he does not have a cardboard box to cover it or a shipping crate.

 

Wondering if anyone knows of a place to get large corrugated boxes for cheap. All the online places I see need a minimum order of 5 unfortunately.

 

Or maybe someone can loan me one and send me a flattened version of the box - I'll pay for shipping of course.

PS - I believe this is my mechanic's way of getting back at me for shipping the engine to zephyr instead of to his favorite field overhaul shop from whom he gets a cut. I don't understand how my mechanic cannot have the boxes or crates for shipping engines .. sigh

I am in the shipping business. I would box the hell out if it, then crate it, and plaster fragile stickers all over it. Be careful if the carriers liability, since its considered as a used product.... From where to where is it going to? If its a short haul you might be able to get an exclusive truck where it doesn't change trucks a lot.

Wait a minute..you are shipping engine for overhaul to Zephr right...get the box from them..if they do a lot of engines they will have the crates...of course figuring all the shipping is part of the engine overhaul processs...when I did the Baron engines..I ordered factory remans but continental had a deal on factory new..so we shipped back cores in same boxes that continental shipped new engines...and I dont think card board is good enough...the sides have to be fork lift proof because sure as anything the trucking company will put a forklift tine through an engine case..

Why not build a box around the pallett.  A sheet of 3/8"plywood and some 2x2 for all inside corners should do nicely.  A skill or bench saw and some 2" deck screws and you are off and running.  Maybe some metal strapping around the whole assembly when finished.

Problem is if I get the crate from zephyr, they have to ship it 4 times. Zephyr to me and back and then repeat.

I might end up just building a sturdy crate from 3/8ths plywood.

I saw that lycon ships engines with a wooden base pallet and a cardboard box, so I thought maybe the heavy duty cardboard box will be okay (have the engine on the pallet already).

But I will follow your advice robert7467 especially since this is the second time people in the shipping business have said that

Basically you want it bullet proof.. Like I said liability on used items can be as low as .20 cents per pound...

Any place that ships engines, a big truck service dept for example, will have rolls of stout plastic wrap. I'd pallet, wrap, the enclose with plywood-

Thanks for the advice, I am going with the plywood crate idea.

Also I am thinking of making a foam base that will fit the engine base perfectly ... Distribute the load evenly. I know of such liquid foam which then settles later and becomes rigid.
