The prevention of lead oxide deposits is not a function of oil but of the ethylene dibromide in avgas and CHT's. Proper temp management, from start up to shutdown, by the human in the left seat. Some blowby is inevitable in our air cooled engines, but by applying proper technique and changing oil frequently we can mitigate it. Oil can't do this alone . We play a huge role.

I'm not talking about lead in the spark plugs or combustion chamber. I am talking about gray lead bromide sludge in the engine and particularly in the ring lands.  Synthetic oil cannot suspend this stuff and carry it away.  Our old engine was fed a steady diet of 15W50 for 1200 hours, and when we bought it, it used a quart of oil every 5 hours. The ring lands were full of carbon because we pulled a jug off to look at it.  After a blasting of MMO and a switch to W100 Aeroshell and Camguard, the oil filter was trashed with a teaspoon of carbon and other crap for two oil changes. Then it settled down, and used oil at a quart every 8 hours.

Fortunately you will need a bigger stick to get that swarm going. Ok, I'll start it "I LIKE CHAMPIONS!"

An filter for an automobile is 7$. For an airplane it's 20$. Difference of 13$ @ twice a year is 26$ or 39$ for three oil changes!

I wouldn't pay 35$ for an oil filter! Would anyone?

Do you have a choice? Some Van's RV guys run a 1515 Wix filter. They strap it with a hose clamp to safety wire it.

Hmm....hose clamp and saftey wire not a bad idea, unless you ask the FAA. Not saying I'm gonna do that but, I wonder if there any real differences when compared to the FAA filter besides the lack of safety wire and the buracratic blessing.

I have a funny filter story, funny that is until I figured out how much it was costing me. On my PC system there were at least two, maybe three "vacuum" filters on the pneumatic system. They were changed out every annual. Back in the early 90s they were somewhere in the $20 each range. I was able to buy them myself and used them doing my owner assisted annuals. One annual I was taking them out of the box and I noticed the label was loose on one of them and like a Cirrus guy seeing terra firma from a bad angle, I pulled it - only to reveal a nice "Fram G2" underneath. Went down to the local auto parts store to find that wonderful gasoline filter on sale for $1.50. I'm sure there was $18.50 in "value" there, but I sure couldn't find it. My suspicion is that the label cost $18.50.

In the early 90's label makers were very expensive to operate. Unlike today where you can print a label on your computer! I can see it! ...

...Just like I can see how big my Mooney 48103 filter is, It is 7x as big as my car filter!

here is the thread. http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=87428&highlight=oil+filter+1515

Dont take this as advice to put it on your certificated airplane.  But there are some flying around on RV's.

One interesting comment there on that thread. The person does not safety wire, because if its loose enough to rotate, it will be spraying oil out everywhere - sounds logical :) I am not suggesting everybody not safety your filters .. but thought it was an interesting point.
