RobertE Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 On another thread I described the stupid pilot trick of mine that produced a prop strike. In earlier threads I've read fairly menacing comments about how insurance companies sometimes deny coverage for a technicality. So I want to give kudos to Chartis. The quote for relocating the aircraft and doing a tear down of the engine and overhaul of the prop was $19K. Chartis asked for routine stuff (photos, a description of the incident, evidence of a valid license and medical, a detailed quote, etc) and today called to say coverage was confirmed and to ask where to send the $19K (to be increased if the teardown itself indicated further damage than expected). The incident was 5 days ago, I had been a Chartis customer for all of 14 days prior to the incident (previously with USAIG) and they've not even received my first premium check. Pretty good service. The least I can do is recommend them to others. Quote
jetdriven Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 Wait till you get the renewal bill and all the other companies refuse to quote you. Quote
aviatoreb Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 Wait till you get the renewal bill and all the other companies refuse to quote you. true...but I bet the renewal bill will be less than $19k I hope. Quote
jetdriven Posted January 18, 2013 Report Posted January 18, 2013 Sure. It will just be two grand for the next three years from Chartis only. 1 Quote
RobertE Posted January 19, 2013 Author Report Posted January 19, 2013 The AOPA agency through which I purchased the insurance says I should expect a small increase or, if I can provide evidence of taking one of those AOPA online safety courses within the last 6 months, no increase. The later deal is a provision of the policy. But I think the last one I took was over a year ago. In any event, I'll provide a report a year from now on renewal. Time will tell. Quote
aaronk25 Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 After my gear up last year and 60k in damage my insurance went from $1700 to 1600, so it went down $100 bucks because I got more time in type That was through Chartis. Quote
jetdriven Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 Aaron, did anyone else decline to quote you when you renewed your policy? Quote
bnicolette Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I just did my renewal. I had a small claim with Chartis and the premium went up very slightly but Phoeniex did pull their quote. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD Quote
aaronk25 Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 Ya know one would insure me. I was really pissed off at Chartis about some other things that happened during the claim processing so I tried to get insurance elsewhere but was told no one else would insurance me as they wanted to let Chartis collect a few years of premium before they would consider insuring me, as a courtesy to Chartis. aaronk25 Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 Not to rehash the old thread but I installed 25k of avionics in the bird a few days before my incident and didn't adjust the hull vale but my policy said they would cover 130% of the hull value for additions within 30 days. Sure enough they wanted to total the bird instead of fix, and refused to use the extra 30% allowance for recent installations until I involved mn dept of commerce. Quote
tony Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 Sure. It will just be two grand for the next three years from Chartis only. When I was running a flying club and one of the members had an accident, that's exactly what happened. It wasn't chartis though, it was one of the other underwriters. Quote
Alan Fox Posted January 19, 2013 Report Posted January 19, 2013 I had a 7K claim 5 years ago , my premiums never went up, I believe I am with Aerospace........ Quote
1964-M20E Posted January 24, 2013 Report Posted January 24, 2013 Chartis did good by me when Issac flooded my plane. My preimum went up but so did my insured hull value so I really do not have a good comparison. Quote
