Panel upgrade - need suggestions - recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hello all......

I just returned from overseas and this is my first post.  Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong place.

A friend of mine is assisting me with working thru a panel upgrade and he recommended that I post it on here for comments and recommendations from folks on the forum. I just posted the pictures in the gallery but I think I figured how to get them in this thread.

The first one is a proposed panel and the second is the panel now with one exception.  I had the king transponder replaced with a Garmin 327 already.

My lose plan is to install the Garmin 430 and delete one King radio.  Lose the ADF and DME and keep the TCAD while trying to fit some kind of hand held XM/WX capability in the panel.  I have another aircraft and fly other planes so portable is better for me.  I am currently in TX but will move to FL soon and be doing most of my flying in South FL.

I would ask the smart folks that have tackled such a project to comment and give me their thoughts. I am most interested in feasibility (will it fit?) and options or different units that may give the same capability.  It appears that I can make this happen for about 15K and would probably like to keep it in that range.

thanks

Parker is right, I have the 696 panel mounted.  It was a good upgrade and is easy to see clearly across the cockpit.  I used the angle adapter which I don't like because it interferes with the use of the right side knobs on the 530.  I am in the process of putting the G600 in the plane in the next few weeks and I am going to flat mount the 696 at that time.  I probably could get rid of the 696 but I already own it so I am going to keep it in place.  In your plane I would do the 696 because it is a great instrument and the panel page might be a life saver if you have a vacuum and electrical failure since the 696 will continue to run on battery.  The weather depiction is much better than the 496 I used to have.  My favorite thing about the panel page on the 696 is that my son gets a decent set of instruments in front of him.

Gary,

Yes,  I am very happy with the 696 alongside of my 430.  The 430 is linked to 696 so direct to and waypoints entered into the 430 automatically come up on the 696.  You can't put jepp charts on the 696 but the fact that you can have two different views up at the same time makes for great situational awareness.  I am probably going to put in a Zaon xrx in which would give me traffic and weather on the 696 for a fraction of the price that I did in my last plane with a MX20  to display GDL weather and GTX 330 tis traffic.  I also yanked my ADF to make room because I would have never used it and a few extra pounds useful are always good.  I have pictures of panel in my gallery and the angle the avionics shop did works great and doesn't obstruct items on either side.

I have the 695 connected to the Zaon XRX, works nice. Not as goos as a active system, but better than nothing. You will loose the cross-fill from your 530, as the 696 has only one serial input.
