I need to replace one of the two springs pulling the exhaust pipe to the firewall in my M20C 1965. These two springs prevent the pipe from rubbing on the cowl flaps.

Would anyone know where I can get this item at a reasonable price? Would anyone have such a part available or know how I can get this?

I sent an email to an MSC in California shop a week ago (I will be around there next month) and no reply :-(

Price quoted by my local mechanic is way too high for what this should be really worth.

Thanks in advance.

Aerospace welding, inc has them. not cheap though, they sell a kit of 3 for ~50$

EDIT: i am thinking of the pipe joint springs. wrong ones.

Yeah - I had issues with these snapping here and there. I had two snap on me in three years and it was suggested just to keep a spare on board so that I don't get stuck somewhere. On my F Model I think it was 2 springs that held the exaust.

When I go to the hanger, I'm going to closely look at the Missile and see if any springs are part of that assembly, as I haven't carried these springs in the last year.

They were readily avaialbe from two separate MSC's (one at W00 in Maryland and one at FCM in Minnesota) where I was located when the broken spring was noticed during preflight 2009 or annual 2010.

Good luck!

Mine kept breaking on me too. My mechanic replaced them with a similar length of tire rubber. I asked if it was legal, and he said it was common and a lasting fix. I had annuals done at a MSC twice after that repair, and other shops since, and I've mentioned it and nobody has seen fit to change it with a spring. The replacement was done about 5 years ago, no problems since and it was certainly cheap.

My F model has this as well. I have several springs running around if you are interested. PM me

Thanks all for your feed-back. This is greatly appreciated. 1964-M20E I sent you a PM. KJATCt, thanks for the info on the kit. This seems like a permanent solution. Do you know how much it costs for the kit?

When I had my B model , I made them out of the wire scat tubing clamps , they lasted until I sold the plane.... My E model came with about 5 extras new in the plastic , so I am good for a while....

On my old F mooney I had the rubber strap to support the exhaust pipe. It kept breaking and I kept getting cracks in my exhaust system. I finally took it off. After that I flew that plane for 15 years and about 4000 hours and never had any trouble with the exhaust system again.

Thank you for the offer N201MKTurbo. I have already got John above to send springs to me. If this does not work, I will get back to you.

Yves:

Clarence at Tri-city installed the replacement kit for those springs on mine. Cheap too. Worth never having to worry about a broken one again. I replaced springs six times in the first three years of ownership.
