Aviation Day is a free, annual community event organized by the Lee County Port Authority aimed at educating the residents of Southwest Florida about the social and economic benefit to the region by aviation. Aviation Day will be he

ld at Page Field in Fort Myers on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is held on the north ramp off N. Airport Road.

This year, visitors will be able to view a North American P-51D Mustang that began its service in 1945 at Page Field. The second featured aircraft - new to Aviation Day - is a Douglas DC-7B in Eastern Airlines livery. This four-engine, completely restored aircraft was delivered to Eastern in 1958 and was one of the last piston-engine commercial planes built before the advent of the jet age.

Other attractions will include experimental, antique and military plane exhibits, plane rides, WGCU "Untold Stories" of aviation history in Southwest Florida, children's activities and character appearances, demonstrations by airport police and fire departments, refreshments and more.

Though admission is free, we are asking those coming to the event to help our local community by bringing a non-perishable food item. All donations will benefit The Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida whose mission is to overcome hunger in our communities through education and by working in a cooperative effort with affiliated agencies in the procurement and distribution of food, equitably and without discrimination.

Please note the Page Field Aviation Day is a broad based, ongoing, annual event. Usually very well attended and both fun and informative. It will be nice to see a Mooney flag flying there.

The Lopresti Saturday b-fasts are regular monthly happenings,  have been held for about ten years, usual good attentance, and in my experience at least, are a hit or miss. There aren't displays, other than Lopresti, usually. They are good people.

Just so there isn't any confusion.

You are absolutely right Gary, both events are well established and are perfect for our Ambassador mission of supporting Mooney and promoting GA.  Peter volunteered to be the point person for the Page Aviation day. He worked with the event administration to get the four or five spots for our airplanes.

When I was interviewing David LoPresti for the AOPA article on charitable events, he suggested they have a Mooney-themed event. I offered to help get the word out on this fun monthly breakfast that supports ALS research and features CarolAnn Garrett.  CarolAnn has flown around the world three times now with her latest adventure ending just this spring.

If there are other events that folks would like to turn into an Ambassador display, just let me know and I will walk you through the process.  Again our best events are ones that give us access to the flying and non-flying public.  Being a point person is actually painless and very rewarding!
