Bendix Ignition Replacement Needed

Hi Everyone.

I need to replace my ignition switch again. I replaced it with a used one in September but apparently, the contacts on that one went bad. I have seen new Bendix models offered in the $600.00 - $700.00 range, but that seems so offensive to me. Does anyone here have any quality suggestions on a replacement for me to consider? I have an F model with the Left, Right, Start, Push switch.  Thanks in advance.

Take yours apart, clean the contacts and put it back together again.

Don't mess with the bumps on the bottom just clean them with solvent. Use fine sand paper on the U shaped pieces to smooth out any pitting, then polish them till shiny. Reassemble with DC4.

Anything you find will need an STC most probably, that involves an IA and paperwork $$ would likely end up what a new Bendix switch costs.

I'm installing my new switch tomo (well, my mechanic is). I'm troubleshooting a starting issue - only fires when I let off the key. It's either the SOS, the ignition switch, or the left mag. The switch is original, so I figured 55 years it deserved a retirement. I was able to locate a new old stock (but appears to be the latest version). Seller was asking $450, and I offered $300 which he accepted. I CAN tell you the new switch feels SO different. The exact/precise way it enters each position is honestly something I've not felt on ANY Bendix switch plane. I know, duh, it's brand new - but shows me how clapped out my switch is.

I could still have a mag issue, but I'll at least have a new switch. It does seem like 50 years is a fail period. I mean, that's a hell of a run.

That it fires when you let off the switch makes me think you have another problem.  Are you able to hear the shower of sparks buzzing?

10-357515 is the Bendix switch repair kit part number. But in most cases, cleaning is all that it needs.

I've had this before on a C172 that starts only on the left mag with an impulse coupling.  When you crank, the right mag is grounded, but if the left mag is not working the engine won't start.  When you let go of the key to the both position, there is still enough RPM for the right mag to start (or kickback).

If any work has been done on the mags or switch or wiring, I would check that the mags are wired to the proper switch position.
