BravoWhiskey Posted August 25, 2024 Report Posted August 25, 2024 Flying home from Nantucket yesterday through NY airspace. ATC had me turn 70degrees right of course then back direct to my fix before joining my airway. This occurred prior to descending to 6000 and getting behind another aircraft which I was sequenced in about 7.5 miles behind. Ok no problem. Then this happens… ATC: Cirrus what’s your airspeed? Mooney what’s your airspeed? Hey Mooney could you do me a favor and slow down a little? I complied but wanted to say Mooney reducing speed for bragging rights… Oh it’s the little victories in life. 2 6 Quote

Someone taxiing behind me once referred to the plane as a Bonanza a few times, then apologized when he realized it was a Mooney. In a classic case of l'esprit d'escalier (wit of the staircase) I realized 10 seconds later I should have popped the speed brakes and said, "now I'm a Bonanza". 2 4 Quote
Hank Posted August 25, 2024 Report Posted August 25, 2024 As I was descending into CRW to meet the examiner, ATC called me "Baron." It was difficult, but I resisted the urge to report a missing engine . . . . Had not the DPE been hanging around waiting for me, I may have succumbed. 1 Quote
Marc_B Posted August 25, 2024 Report Posted August 25, 2024 When I was flying back from Osh this year I stopped for lunch and met up with another M20K driver. We both left IFR and he left just before I did, but was loaded more heavily. We were both flying back to CO, but I was heading to GXY so I filed YOKES as my last waypoint as I've found that keeps Denver from giving you a reroute STAR. Unfortunately Jordan didn't do this and I had passed him by the time Denver gave him a reroute "cleared direct YOKES then direct destination." So they asked me what my speed was, then came back to Jordan with a speed restriction for 10 kts less! I was close enough to home that I asked for a descent thinking that I'd keep the power up and rocket down to create more separation so they'd remove his restriction...ATC was amazing in that they they gave Jordan a descent as well...WITH A SPEED RESTRICTION. I was laughing hysterically and imagining the cursing going on in the Mooney behind me. I kept waiting for Jordan to tell ATC "I'd like to cancel IFR immediately", but I think he wanted the instrument practice. I guess it is true...it pays to be the winner! Quote

Pinecone Posted August 26, 2024 Report Posted August 26, 2024 Was coming back from VT a couple of weeks ago. We were at 10,000, IFR and a Cirrus was parallel off to our right and slightly behind at 10,500. We stayed this way for at least 15 - 20 minutes. Then the Cirrus suddenly sped up and passed. I asked the guy in my right seat (also a pilot), "I wonder how much gas it just cost him to feel better by passing us?: Quote
PT20J Posted August 26, 2024 Report Posted August 26, 2024 So when we are faster, we brag about speed, and when we are slower we brag about economy. Can’t beat a Mooney pilot’s logic. 3 1 7 Quote

I just saw an article about Danny Jansen playing for both the Red Socks and the Blue Jays in a single day (today I believe) due to a suspended game and being traded...and they quoted It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia..."I'm playing both sides so that I always come out on top!" 1 Quote

201Mooniac Posted August 26, 2024 Report Posted August 26, 2024 Many years ago I was flying with a good friend of mine in his Bravo and we were returning to SJC and NORCAL asked us to keep our speed up on the approach. When we got handed off to tower we were asked to slow down for the Southwest 737 in front of us, 20kts slower. Biggest smiles on both of our faces Quote
Shadrach Posted August 26, 2024 Report Posted August 26, 2024 Cirrus is small potatoes. I was returning with a bunch of friends to Harrisburg, PA after a long Fall weekend at State college for home game. We were descending out of the Northwest with a healthy tailwind (something like 225Kts GS or more) for right traffic 26 at Capital City. My Pax were not rated pilots but were Savvy enough to give funny looks when I was asked to reduce speed for Falcon traffic before us. Pax were not Savvy enough to gather that the Falcon was out of the Southeast and fighting the very winds that were pushing us along. Quote

PT20J Posted August 27, 2024 Report Posted August 27, 2024 Heading for SJC for the 30L ILS one night many years ago and the controller was trying to get us lined up behind a Citation. My copilot and I noted that this would be interesting because I was going downhill -- fast single, slow jet. Sure enough we ended up closing on GILRO at about the same time and distance. I offered to slow down and let the Citation go ahead -- that airplane is a lot more expensive to operate than mine and I wasn't in a hurry. Quote

There is a quote repeated by Paul Bertorelli in comparing a recent Cirrus model to the Acclaim Ultra, "there's an old joke about the Cirrus taking birdstrikes from the rear". Quote

Actually, that's a recycled Citation joke from 35 years ago when the early Citations were derisively called Slotations. Still, Cessna sold a lot of them. Crow all you want about how much faster/more efficient a Mooney is than a Cirrus but Mooney is not producing airplanes (and most likely never will again) and a lot of parts have become unobtanium while Cirrus is selling lots of airplanes. Apparently the people that can afford a Cirrus are indifferent to fuel costs. 1 Quote

Also heard the joke a lot when I flew the A-10. Of course, with that plane, no one wanted to be in front of you if you got mad at them. 2 Quote

If you can afford $1.2mm on a new GA aircraft, I doubt the price of gas or GPH is much concern. A friend of mine has a buddy whose a Cirrus owner. He flys at 80% power and doesn't care about the GPH or the CHT's. 1 Quote
