Well even flightaware has him up to 169, might be all that excess fuel weight getting used up allowing him to go faster with the same fuelflow and power setting.

Okay. I’m calling BS on this one. There’s no way that plane was flying within the weight limits given the size of the pilot’s massive balls.

i really do not know how they got enough fuel on the plane to make that trip, especially how inefficient a cessna 172 is geesh whole cockpit must have been fuel tanks!

The C172 type certificate includes the following note.  A late model 172R probably weighs 1700 lbs and has a gross of 2550. 50G fuel is 300, pilot 200, ferry tanks 100.  So still another 250 lbs fuel.  The 30% over gross is another 750 lbs, so it is possible to carry 1300 lbs fuel total, or 215G.  At 9 GPH this is 24 hours. 

This flight is at 18 hours, 2.5 to go.  So 20.5 and maybe 2 or 3 hour reserve.

Never mind fuel, I would worry about an oil filler system?

load factors of +2.5 g. to -1.0 g. may not be exceeded. Requirements for any additional oil should be
established in accordance with Advisory Circular AC23.1011-1. Increased stall speeds and reduced climb
performance should be expected for the increased weights. Flight characteristics and performance at the
increased weights have not been evaluated. Flight Permit for operations of overweight aircraft may be found
in Advisory Circular AC21-4B.

That’s also the Ferry route to Hawaii and Australia and if i recall correctly Merced is where they install ferry tanks.

Some years ago we had a ferry pilot experience a fatal takeoff there when the ferry tank wasn’t properly secured and moved during takeoff resulting in a crash. it was actually a flight of two with the other pilot being a veteran at it leading and the Mooney following with a newer pilot headed to Australia if i recall correctly.

I’ll admit it when i was young and naïve i could see getting some enjoyment out of such an adventure, now not so much. I’m just too old and have too much to lose to fly 12 plus hours over the ocean to get any type of satisfaction or joy doing such a trip.
