--I have a 1962 M20C, serial 2037. The flap-position selector knob (not the long pump handle) has a little center button that must be pushed in while pulling the knob out.  It is very difficult to operate from the right seat.  See pic.
--Many years ago the first Mooney I flew had a different design of selector, with a flap-shaped handle that moved up and down not in and out. Does anyone know the part number of that design, and if it's possible to retrofit onto my Mooney. Thanks guys.

I believe that in both cases, the control on the dash just moves a valve on the pump block via a cable. I would expect that the lever assembly should functionally work perfectly well in the place of the knob assembly, though you probably need a good amount of hardware for it.

My 63 C model has something that is dirt simple.  It is a push pull knob but without any sort of center button to push.  You just pull it when you want the flaps to come up and it retracts on its own when you let it go.  Simple.  Maybe something like that would be easier for you to change to.  You can see it in the attached image.

The cable is the same part number for your ‘62 and subsequent ‘63 M20Cs.  I think that most vintage Mooneys have had the center button removed.

I believe that if you disconnect the retract cable wire at the lever on the flap pump (straighten the wire as much as you can) and pull the knob out of the panel out a few inches, the ball-lock bearing will be exposed (and probably fall out and get lost) and you can then remove the inner knob.  (This would be a good time to squirt some Tri-Flow into the cable sheath.)  Push the cable back in, set the knob cushion to the panel, and reconnect the wire to the retract lever on the pump.  Ops check and you’re done.
