M20R Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 My right wing white nav light has burned out and when I went to replace it, the cost of 58 dollars kind of blew me away for such a small light bulb. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative or maybe a LED option? Quote
Scottknoll Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 Whelen LED. Couple hundred bucks, but super bright. Hangar neighbor said he can see Nav/Strobes a few miles out on final, during the day (I don’t do much night flying). Last picture is a still pulled from video of the LED strobes. Strobes are the only light in the picture. Quote

Scottknoll Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 Oops. Well then I am interested in any information on these too. Just replaced the $85 halogen beacon instead of converting to the $1500 Whelen LED beacon. Those are the last 3 non-LEDs we have. Quote

Those lights last +/- 20 years, and there aren’t any Whelen solutions, just after market bulbs from Aero Lites (https://www.aero-lites.com/product-page/AL-508-3180). So I think this is one case where you are better off to stick with incandescent since on Mooneys the Nav lights are on the same circuit as your Gear Down light and I believe that putting LED in all of your NAV lights will cause your Gear Down light to always be on DIM. PT20J Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 Mooney used two different bulbs for the white wingtip tail lights: A wedge base bulb and a bi-pin base bulb. The bi-pin bulb is obsolete and only available if you find new old stock. The wedge base requires changing the socket. It's best to keep these incandescent because if there are no incandescent bulbs in the nav light circuit the annunciator Gear Down indicator will always be dim. 1 Quote
Aerodon Posted October 2, 2023 Report Posted October 2, 2023 I eventually went with the aft mounted tail and strobe lights. I have a couple of the AeroLEDS thad didn't fit, and I have the old wingtips, might have one halogen that works. Aerodon supercub180@gmail.com Quote
