I am going to have a new Zeftronics Voltage Regulator put in to see if it clears up my radio static.  I have read the manual but am unable to determine where it is located.  Can anyone confirm its location in a 1987 M20J?  I think perhaps under the glareshield, right side.  Thanks.

Russ:

Other than the fact that the picture below is for a Zeftronics Generator Control Unit on my aircraft, I believe we have the same setup.  Clarence is changing my generator over for the Plane Power Conversion as I write this.

Note the brass-coloured box with the fins on the top left of the picture?  That is it.  I believe that is the exact same location as the Voltage Regulator for an alternator setup on the J model.

Edit:

Looks like owners of J's have answered your question and I (it appears) was wrong.  Apologies.

I had mine recently changed on a '78 J. Not where the previous posters mentioned. Mine is in the copilot side foot bay on the right side wall on the inside. The screws come in from the outside wall and someone had to hold from outside so the person inside could undo the nuts. Not sure if this is a non-standard setup but just sharing from recent experience.

I remember now that there are two flush exterior screws on the side of the fuselage a few inches above the co-pilot's side air vent that hold it on. Does that sound the same as yours, Mike?

Just had mine done over Christmas. It was also on the co-pilot's side, tucked right under the panel and pretty easy to get to.  BTW, that photo from the second poster doesn't look ANYTHING like my VR, nor does it look like the Zeftronics unit that replaces it. But maybe I have a different model for some reason.
