Anyone with recent experience with paper 8710's? I took my helicopter CFi checkride last week but IACRA was down for maintenance. The DPE said that if he can't log into IACRA and start the oral exam timer we have to do paper. I passed the checkride but then I had to fly home to get a wet CFI signature on a paper 8710 and will have to mail a copy to the DPE to send to the FAA. I image the paper process must take a lot longer than IACRA? (I had to fly out to Oregon for a DPE because we don't have any in Norcal).

Never heard of him. Unfortunately there are a few on the books so the fsdo won’t approve more. Our school is sending multiple applicants a week up to Oregon now.

That’s funny.

Back in 2016 when I was doing my ratings from hell month, I couldn’t schedule a check ride around here with anybody. I needed to go to Portland for work, so I called Hillsboro Aviation and asked if they knew a DPE who could give me a commercial check ride. They connected me with their chief pilot and DPE who said he could do one next Tuesday night, so I flew the Mooney the Oregon and did my commercial check ride at night.

John did my rotorcraft - helicopter practical test. Afterwards, I was the first one to fly the first R-22 he and his partner obtained when they started Sirius Flying. I flew with John a number of times for currency over the years. He flew Hueys in Vietnam and spent time in New Zealand flying helicopters and instructing in them before coming back stateside. I always enjoyed flying with him. The last time was maybe eight years or so ago shortly after his wife of many years passed away, He doesn't currently show up on the FAA DPE list and Sirius Flying. LLC in Palo Alto appears to be defunct, so I assume he has retired.

i really like flying with john!

when i did commercial heli in the 44, we went from SQL across the bay to the SUNOL pass, then south through the valley towards the calavaras reservoir. We were below the ridge line in the valley,  so I asked John where the best place to fly down a valley in a helicopter.  without missing a beat “where they’re not shooting at you”

I spoke with my heli instructor in Nor Cal. he says there's a heli DPE in VNY that travels. PM me for details
