PlaneLogiX makes it pretty easy to keep them updates.  If willing, you mechanic can upload their log entries directly and digitally sign them and then use that as the source to print the label for the paper logbooks.  Overall it's a great service.

When I bought my plane I spent a couple of hours and scanned every logbook page into a pdf file for each logbook. After each annual inspection I sit down for 5 minutes and scan all new pages since the previous annual. I store all of these, and all of my other computer files for that matter, in dropbox in the cloud. For those not familiar, for around $100 / year dropbox keeps all of your files safe in the cloud and also syncs the files between all of your computers. If I update a single file on one computer, within seconds that file is replicated on all of the 10 or so computers I own and use. You never have to worry about a hard disk or computer failure again.

Reason logs have gone missing around here…

1) Estate sales… Pilot passes, family doesn’t know what logs are….  Or where they are kept…

2) Maintenance Hangar fire…

3) Government auction…

Since forever planes eventually change hands… make sure your grandkids know what and where the logs are… :)

Thanks for all the input. what happened was that the owner of the shop that had been doing maintenance and annuals for me for about eight years had my logs. The logs were lost when he moved his shop from one hanger to another. He bought some new blank log books and was going to reconstruct new ones. He kept putting it off for a couple of years but unfortunately he suddenly passed away. I was able to get into his computer, but he only kept copies of annuals and only up to 2014.

So that's my sad story. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.
