I have an oil temp guage that was bouncing around on the “hot” side, but now it’s stuck to  “hot” during flight (needle leans to the far right and doesn’t move, in other words).  It’s part of my original 6 guage cluster:

Top 3: left fuel, right fuel, ammeter

Bottom 3: oil temp; oil pressure, cht

Any ideas how to diagnose the issue or repair it?

i do have space in the panel to add a new guage but not sure if the probe/sensor end will fit in the same location this one is taking the temp from.

I am dealing with this issue right now.  I would say first disconnect the wires from the sender, the gauge should read full hot.  Connect the two wires together and the gauge should read low.   So basically no continuity should read high, complete continuity should read low. The sender is supposed to vary continuity between those two extremes to tell you how hot the oil is.  That should give you some idea whether it is the sender or the gauge. In my case it was some loose wires making the gauge read full hot.

If you prove that it's not the sender or the wiring, you can get those gauges overhauled if they're similar to the ones in my '67.  Forget the name of the company up in the north east but I could look it up.

I believe it's lockhaven that overhauls those

Master off. Normal reading. Engine is cold. Outside air temp about 75F.

Master on, needle moves to far right instantly. Engine is cold. Outside air about 75F.

To answer the question in the title:  a JPI!

When there is trouble with the gauges, the best investment is a JPI or equivalent engine monitor.  I would have never coughed up the money for an engine monitor.  I bought an airplane with a JPI 930 and it made a believer out of me.

The only person that I have heard with a negative comment toward engine monitors, is my friend with the warbird museum.  He has several large hangars full of airplanes to fly.  He says he likes individual gauges because it’s easier to move from plane to plane.  I only have two to move back and forth between, so I don’t have his problem, that is if you want to call that a problem.

And… if for some reason one wants to stay with individual gauges and go digital presentation with that…

EI has a bunch to select from… primary, or non-primary…

Best regards,

Before you commit to repairing your gage be sure to check to see if it is in a cluster that has all 6 as individual removable gages or if it is early enough it has all 6 tied together. If is 6 tied together they have to overhaul ALL 6 at the same time.  Can't just do one. Cost? $$$$$

what was the outcome of this?  I am having the same issue..  The oil temp pegs max every so often.  Seems to happen when it is very hot outside.
