RJBrown Posted July 9, 2021 Report Posted July 9, 2021 My wife and I are visiting the grandchildren in Rexburg Idaho this week. My son in law told me there is a airplane museum at the municipal airport. It is called the Legacy Flight Museum. Pretty neat little place to stop and look around. Inside they have one of 3 airworthy P63 King Cobras, the P51 Mormon Mustang, a Beech 18, a S-2 Tracker, a Stearman, a T-6, a 0-1 Bird Dog and a DHC-4 Caribou that all fly and are airworthy plus a static A4 in Blue Angels livery and a Mash helicopter. Plus a lot of interesting military memorabilia. Just as we were about to leave another guy came over and mentioned they had Ole Yeller and ask if I wanted to see it, it was in the next hangar opened up for an annual. well the answer was yes. His Shrike Commander may be in the Smithsonian but Bob Hoover’s Mustang is in Idaho. 7 1 Quote
carusoam Posted July 9, 2021 Report Posted July 9, 2021 Great pic RJ! Working on that engine looks almost as tight as working on a Mooney. Best regards, -a- Quote

PeteMc Posted July 9, 2021 Report Posted July 9, 2021 There used to be another P-51 over at KJAC and also a T-??? that had a fully functional ejection seat. Quote

They really cleaned it up, it was a lot greasier when I worked on it. I took all those cowl skins off, it is really cool taking apart a mustang! Edited July 9, 2021 by N201MKTurbo 2 Quote

We were there a few years back on their annual pancake breakfast day, good times. Quote
RJBrown Posted July 9, 2021 Author Report Posted July 9, 2021 They put an air show on last Father’s Day weekend. My son-in-law told me about it. I really didn’t believe it was a big as he told me. I was wrong. yes it is quite a place and I will return before I head home. I failed to bring my phone and need to get some pictures of everything else. Quote
RJBrown Posted July 11, 2021 Author Report Posted July 11, 2021 I failed to mention the yellow Stinson and the maroon Howard. pretty impressive museum for a little college town of under 30,000. Quote
Skates97 Posted July 11, 2021 Report Posted July 11, 2021 I think it is maybe every Father's Day Weekend? It was Father's Day Weekend in 2017 when we were there. Quote
kerry Posted July 11, 2021 Report Posted July 11, 2021 Pretty amazing collection. Most of you probably know the story of the Mormon Mustang in WW2. If not I thought I'd mention that the Mormon Mustang shot down a ME-262. Really cool story to listen to when the P51 pilot Roland R. Wright was interviewed on the radio after the event. Quote
1964-M20E Posted July 11, 2021 Report Posted July 11, 2021 Great little museum. I stumbled on it in 2017 when I was working in Idaho Falls. I was headed up to Yellowstone and saw the sign and turned in. They had a pancake breakfast and air show going on that day too. I met a fellow MSer while there too. I do not remember the Blue Angel plane it must be a new addition. The cobras were impressive and interesting. Not that they are open for tours but there is an outfit, Pacific Fighters, at Idaho Falls , KIDA, that rebuilds old WWII fighters. One day after flying I walked down the ramp to their shop and talked to the guys for a while. Very interesting. One plane they were rebuilding appeared to have a few original pieces, data plate and mostly new pieces built around it. It would appear there is plenty of money in growing potatoes . Quote
RJBrown Posted July 11, 2021 Author Report Posted July 11, 2021 Yes, I understand the Father’s Day event is an annual thing. the A-4 in Blue Angels paint was bought to make a sign on a pole but was in such good shape that they kept it. I understand it could be used as “trade bait” for another classic. It is the only unrestored, non flying plane in the group. It is in restorable condition. Quote
