bcbender10 Posted February 21, 2021 Report Posted February 21, 2021 My KAS-297B is showing the display below. It occurred while I was rotating the altitude preselect outer ring. I suspect it blew a diode or something and needs to be replaced or overhauled. There's quite a range of prices on e-Bay for yellow tagged ($900) vs overhauled ($3+AMU). What are this group's thoughts on causes and best remedial action? I just had a factory reman engine, new prop, and twin GI275s installed. Not eager for another capital upgrade to GFC500 right now... N231BN Posted February 21, 2021 Report Posted February 21, 2021 I wouldn't pay up for an "overhaul" unless it has a new display. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted February 21, 2021 Report Posted February 21, 2021 I would start searching for used parts (various pilot sites, eBay, etc), this is for anyone who plans on keeping their autopilots. Probably find them pretty cheap from people who’ve upgraded, just keep them on hand as spares. Quote
carusoam Posted February 22, 2021 Report Posted February 22, 2021 New APs have this function included... Meaning finding altitude control boxes and displays being more plentiful with time... See if @Alan Fox has one on the shelf... Best regards, -a- Quote
bcbender10 Posted February 22, 2021 Author Report Posted February 22, 2021 Thanks, all! Search underway. Ebay has 3 levels of choices... 1) No yellow tag ($800) 2) Yellow tagged (~1800) 3) overhauled ($3AMU+). I'm inclined to go with option 2) Quote

I'm inclined to go with option 2) The yellow tag just means that at that moment in time it was working. I’d go with option one at less than half the price if the seller guarantees it working on arrival. 4 Quote

Was talking with my shop this morning about a couple of unrelated things, and they have a couple of these. They keep inventory well-protected and are exceptional to work with (hence my 11+ year relationship, 3 airplanes, and 6 collective upgrades with them). They're locating them now to determine condition of them, and will get back to me later today about condition and what they're willing to accept. Ideal situation is I can put the two of you together to work thru numbers and a plan, should the stars align...if that works for you. Steve 1 1 Quote

I got mine from him a few years ago and it has worked flawlessly. He delivered in less than a week, if I recall. 1 Quote
