Garmin Pilot - TAC change

Hi all,

This doesn't apply to any installed avionics, but I do also have and use an iPad with Garmin Pilot and thought I'd share something I just learned.  I found that the Terminal Area Charts that I previously downloaded from the Documents>Folders>Documents>Add section won't open or renew.  I contacted Garmin, which has great support, and they told me they've moved them to the downloads section with other charts.  That makes sense, but the change caught me wondering where they were.  Here's the Garmin reply, in case it helps anyone else:

You are correct, in stating that the TACs are no longer available in the document section. We have moved them from the document section to a downloadable database for viewing on the map page. If you go from the Home Menu > Downloads > Garmin Pilot Downloads > VFR/IFR Enroute Charts section of downloads, you will see a line for US VFR TACs and Insets, click here, then CONUS. This will bring up a map and then you can download the San Diego and Phoenix TACs. Once they are downloaded, you can view them on the map page by ensuring that the VFR Charts map overlay is turned on, and zooming in on the terminal area of San Diego or Phoenix. Once you zoom in enough, the map page will automatically transfer from a sectional chart to the TAC chart. If you would like the TAC charts in the documents section, you could also download the TAC charts from the internet on the iPad and upload them to the documents section of Garmin Pilot by adding the document to the Garmin Pilot folder on iCloud. Please let us know if you would like any additional information.

Anybody using the new version 10 of Pilot? Apparently I can't upgrade because I have an iPad mini 2 and the new version requires the latest iPad operating system, which the older iPad's can't upgrade to.

yes, lots of great enhancements. My wife was in the same boat with an older ipad, I had upgraded to the new Mini when they became available. But with the incompatibility of older IOS with new GP 10 I had my wife finally get a new mini for GP and she is glad she did - got the pencil too.

As a follow up to this, I tried to test what Garmin suggested and it isn't work right for me.  I also got a DM from another MSer who reported challenges, too.  So, I sent this off to Garmin this morning:

Good morning, and thanks for the prompt and thorough response.  Unfortunately, both I and another Mooney pilot have tried this and it's not working right for us.

I have all the CONUS TAC charts downloaded, according to the Downloads section, and I have the VFR Chart overlay turned on.  Here's what I see:

For the San Diego area, zooming in shows the dotted magenta line for the VFR corridor and the requirements for that corridor show up in the magenta text box to the left.  That seems pretty good.

For the Phoenix and Los Angeles areas, zooming in shows the magenta arrows of the VFR routes and a note to see the inset for requirements.  The requirements don't automatically show up as they do for the San Diego route.  And I can't find a way to show the inset for further info on the requirements.

The inserts on the LA TAC has been a deficiency for years since the GP roll out. We've had TAC maps in GP for as long as I can remember but not the inserts. Same goes for TEC routes in SOCAL and NORCAL (and east coast as well). Work arounds get  us by for the missing TEC routes although its a pain. But there are no good work around for the missing LA TAC inserts, I revert back to WIngsX  but making the LA TAC a separate doc accessible from GP Documents is another way.

WingX also has the same challenge...  how they handle it has been forgotten... by me.

I see some of the data has been included in the regular VFR charts like the visual reporting points...

 

 

One example I see is for the DC area... the TAC chart is included off in the ocean... (?)

Looks like they left their notes there... (not for navigation...)

Just a quick question.  When you emailed Garmin regarding this issue, did you use the Aviation Product support email in Garmin pilot or did you send it through another email?  I ask because I am having a different issue with Garmin Pilot and I have received no response back from Garmin using the email in the aviation product support section other than “We have forwarded your issue to the proper department...”

The best way to contact GP is by phone. 1.866.739.6587. They have call back during busy times so you don't need to hang on the line. However, the talent seems to be inconsistent.

I sent it to the aviation.support@garmin.com address.
