A64Pilot Posted September 24, 2022 Report Posted September 24, 2022 I used to cave dive and tech dive a lot, and used a lot of O2 and Helium. Because of price you want T bottles and a three bottle cascade. The more the better but at some point it gets silly, for me that was three bottles. ‘In truth there is no difference between Aviators breathing O2, medical O2 and welding O2. The source of all is that Dewer of liquid O2 they have out back, but there may be a difference between the bottles themselves, I’ve heard with no confirmation the medical bottles are sterilized, could be I guess. In Georgia getting O2 that wasn’t welding O2 was hard, you needed a Dr’s prescription, so you couldn’t get your portable tank filled except at the airport, which being in a non mountainous State was hard to find, so you almost had to fill yourself. Picture is of the three T bottles of Helium I used to carry in the Maule sometimes for remote dives. Helium is expensive so we had a “Haschal” pump, it’s a high pressure pump that ran off of shop air and could suck a tank down to about 100 PSI and put it in another tank, but a Haschal isn’t cost effective for O2 fills. https://www.divegearexpress.com/haskel-mini-sport-booster However if you want to go down this road do a little reading about O2 clean, every year some tank monkey kills themselves it seems filling an O2 deco bottle etc, one drop of silicone grease on the threads believe it or not will blow up a bottle. https://www.tampabay.com/archive/2011/09/13/oxygen-behind-scuba-blast/ https://www.luxfercylinders.com/news/cylinder-incident-in-luraville-florida Oh, and if your running your own lines etc, try to buy O2 clean lines, valves whatever, low pressure should be OK, but any high pressure be sure it’s O2 clean. Use only leak detector approved for O2 use too and, keep everything clean, the person with the bag on the fittings is being smart. Good friend was eating lunch at a dive shop in Fl (fried Chicken) noticed the deco bottle was full so he wiped his hands off got up turned off both valves and unscrewed the filling adapter, the little bit of high pressure O2 trapped between the two valves escaped of course, but set the tiny bit of chicken oil on his hand on fire and burned it, it was a quick flash then all the oil was gone so it wasn’t a serious burn, but got our attention.
