Welcome aboard Mech.

Are you specific about the 400W?

As there may be a few more 430Ws... a bit more common...

Have you searched The for sale part of this site?

One of the used radio suppliers around here is Mr. Sanford... aka @Alan Fox

Best regards,

At their price you’d be better off buying something new, unless they’ll negotiate.

No kidding.

I did a quick search of eBay and the prices there were just as ridiculous.  People bitching (rightfully so) about new stuff and what they are trying to sell there is just as bad or worse for 10+year old stuff made me shake my head.

Bennett has stuff and yeah, they're proud of it. But they stay in business no doubt as a go to supplier.

When I updated my panel 5 years ago I sold the old radios on Ebay. Bennett was high bidder on the KY 197 at $645. They're currently selling that Comm for $1395.

I see on eBay - using the "completed" function that shows recent past sales prices of units that sold, the most recent 3 sold for $3500, $4250, and $3600.

Hmmmm....How much does an install cost?

Many used Garmin 400W boxes came on the market from Eclipse Jet upgrades. The pre 2.x IFMS versions had a pair of 400W installed.

I bought one of those four years ago (a 400W, not the EJ) and installed it along with an Icom 210 comm Radio in an RV8.  Excellent WAAS system for around $4000 total - but I charged zero for installing it. Recall it took me about 20 hours.

Hmmm....and now they are going for $3500.  plus 20hrs?  That's not so bad.

30 hours would be more realistic. 40 is typical for a GPS/NAV/COM, ie 430W, 650, etc...

The reason these are valued high , is because most GPS only units go into Turboprops and jets , to get WAAS capability , without going too crazy into the avionics suite..... I just sold a GTN725  (gps only ) for 8 K

Sounds right.  The RV8 was easy to work in/on compared to a Mooney.

Don't forget the "bring your own parts" premium that the shop will charge for the install. As they should...

:D

Shop? Just have our resident moonlight installer do it for you @bradp, if he keeps up this rate of installs (on his own plane) he’ll have more experience than most shops ;)

I've seen them every now and then from $3000 to $4000 so that's the route I've chosen to go if I can find one for say around $3500. I have a 96 114TC N295TC and currently have a KLN-90B and two KX-165 so thought I could pull the KLN-90B and install a 400W and not have to butcher my very nice factory panel as the 400W will fit right where the KLN currently sits, then I could sell my KLN-90B for about $800.00 to $1100.00 which then puts me only about $2500 into a400W. So this is kind of why I'm leaning towards a 400W.

I hate to break the news, but the 400w is 2.65" tall, while the KLN-90 is only 2.00" tall.

Reality bites...

And it rewards...

The KLN doesn't have the WAAS...

But G400W Does...

The KLN is short in panel height...

The G is tall...

What else is in the stack that is going to be replaced by the G...?

  • DME?
  • ADF?

Some panel work may still be in the future...

Best regards,
