Joe Larussa Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 Had a little rough engine 20 miles out before landing. Just enough to get my attention. On run up when doing mag check engine would just die when selecting right side. Thoughts? Quote
Hank Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 Sounds like a dead right magneto . . . Did you have strange EGT readings? Quote
Joe Larussa Posted December 29, 2017 Author Report Posted December 29, 2017 All readings seemed normal. Three slight rumbles then smooth. Hind sight being what it is, I should have done the mag check before parking and going to lunch. Could be stuck in worse places! Quote
Guest Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 Before assuming it’s the right mag which has failed, ring out the “P” leads to be sure they go the the correct mags. I’ve seen them crossed before. Clarence Quote
peevee Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 I know of a good mechanic in Watsonville, it's not far by air but not of any help if you're grounded. 1 Quote
Oldguy Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 If you have the dual-headed Bendix mag, you may be out of luck until it gets repaired. How many hours since it was last o/h'ed? Mine had the exact same symptoms 5 hours after its o/h time. Messed with it for about 4 days and finally sent it off for repair. Worked perfectly since then. All this is moot if you have the IO-360-A3B6 with out the "D". Here is hoping it is something simple and obvious. Quote
Bob - S50 Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 When ours died, turned out to be a bad capacitor that we had put in at the 500 hour inspection. It allowed arcing between the points which heated them up so much it melted the plastic riser. Once that happened the points stayed closed so we got no spark. Could be lots of things though. 1 Quote
Yetti Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 Could start with the simple things like P lead grounding out or switch doing bad things 1 Quote
Joe Larussa Posted December 29, 2017 Author Report Posted December 29, 2017 Mags were overhauled about 230 hours ago when the engine was done. Quote
mooneygirl Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 I had a rough mag when I was headed out on an IFR training flight. Thought it was a mag. Turned out to be a spark plug, which was a cheaper fix. Seems like we have a MooneySpacer who is based at Monterey.... Quote

N201MKTurbo Posted December 29, 2017 Report Posted December 29, 2017 Put a mag timer on it and check if both points are opening. Quote

Joe Larussa Posted December 30, 2017 Author Report Posted December 30, 2017 So mag was removed and I brought it home. Going to send it out for testing and repair. Anyone know a good Mooney mechanic in the Monterey area? Installing a mag is not easy. Quote
Joe Larussa Posted December 30, 2017 Author Report Posted December 30, 2017 So here is what my mechanic discovered. The arm that rides on a cam that is made of some kind of nylon is peeling apart. Hence the points could not open. Right side looked like new. WTF.? Quote

carusoam Posted December 30, 2017 Report Posted December 30, 2017 Got a picture of that Joe? The plastic parts inside the mag are sensitive to the environment they are in... Ozone and heat. Best regards, -a- Quote
