I was just informed by a friend of mine that a friend of his is selling his airplane. This is something I would LOVE to have so I thought I would 'test the waters' to see if I can sell my current airplane for a reasonable amount of money and in a reasonable amount of time. I don't plan on advertising it in any of the usual sites. If anyone here is interested or knows someone interested, let me know. If I don't sell it, it won't break my heart since I really like the airplane and I've pretty well got it the way I want it.

I've put about $40,000 into it in upgrades within the last 12 months. Some of the specifics are:

1967 M20F

Ray Jay turbo

3,300 TTAF, 300 SMOH (it flew +/- 150 hours last year)

Garmin 430W (fall 2010)

Aspen 1000 Pro (fall 2010)

S-Tec 40 autopilot

KX-155

KN-62 DME (rewired in the fall of 2010 to eliminate a buzz)

KMA-24 audio panel

EI UBG-16 engine monitor with fuel flow (spring 2010)

new complete exhaust including wastegate at annual in November 2010

new Alpha Aviation seatbelts all four seats with shoulder harnesses in the front (spring 2010)

new NAT intercom with all four places rewired (fall of 2010)

back seats recline to almost flat

manual gear and hydraulic flaps

three year old paint and interior; both an 8 (many would say 9 but I would rather under promise and over deliver)

new door, window and baggage door seals (spring 2010)

hangared

A friend of mine has a glasair III.  I was entering the pattern, and he blew around me like I was sitting still.  Very fast plane.

The guy who has the two hangars on the end of my row has a Glassair and a Harmon Rocket....trying to sell the Harmon without much success because it is a high performance tialwheel and difficult to insure.  The Glassair has a high premium also.  This guy is a retired airline captain, with military fighter time and a mind boggling number of hours and his insurance is close to $6AMU for the pair.  Much faster than my 201, but huge insurance premiums.

How much is the quote to insure the Glassair III?

Testing the water and the water is warm. What are you looking for price wise for the Mooney? Very nice aircraft, and with the turbo/autopilot/aspen a very capable cross country machine that can climb above the weather. You can PM me your price quote if you's like.

Thanks

The seller of the Glasair I've been investigating hasn't responded to my last two E-Mails over the last two weeks so this discussion may very well be moot. No biggie, I love my turbo F and just about have it the way I want it now anyway.

Insurance and maintenance is definitely a consideration. I've got a 1967 M20F in really nice shape. It is pretty close to stock condition. The paint was new in 1995. The prop was new in 2008. The interior was new in 1995 but although in great shape, it was taken from the disco velour design book. The panel is in good condition with the really old tube junk removed. I have a KX155 with ILS, A king panel GPS, mode c transponder and a Brittain autopilot. There have been so many reconfigurations made that the right side needs new sheet metal. The grody old fake wood grain is still there and need removal. The engine is in great shape with 76,76,78,78 compression and uses 1 liter per 10 hours. It still has nearly 1000 hrs before overhaul. The prop is a three blade hartzell and due in 2018. All the tires are new. In the past 12 months, I have replaced all the hard fuel lines (because of tiny perforation leaks), both engine oil lines, all the ducting under the hood, the fuel and oil pressure lines to the panel, and the baffle trim. I put a new Skytec Starter in last month during the new annual. The airplane has been appraised at $62900 USD. I wouldn't even think of selling it for less. This year the plan is to have a nice all new interior put in and maybe next year redo the panel. If you are thinking of buying a bird, you'd best be prepared to spend the money on a pre-buy and then dump a bunch in every year to keep it in perfect shape. I fly my wife and kids around in it so I don't mind the expense. My insurance was $1585 for the year and has a $500 deductable. I pay $450 per month for heated hangerage and have spent $9000+ this year on maintenance. I'd like to get a bird that goes faster than 143 knots at 5000 ASL, but I am very wary of the cost of maintenance. More complex = more expense. I won't even consider a bird with airbags or a parachute system. That's out of my league. This bird uses 10.4 us gph in cruise at 9500 ASL and is a joy to fly. Rock solid in level flight and runs at 18 inches of manifold pressure with the ram air open at 14,500 ASL.  Just to give you an idea.
