Moving my Acclaim to California!

Weather permitting, I'll be moving my Acclaim to Petaluma, CA (O69) tomorrow morning. So far the forecast looks good.

Hoping to do a lot more flying out there with my wife in the much smoother air of the West Coast. She won't fly in Colorado any more - too much turbulence. I don't blame her.

Wheels up at 6:40am. Not a single bump or cloud to be found until reaching the vicinity of Petaluma, where I flew the RNAV (GPS) RWY 29 approach down to minimums through the coastal fog. Truly a glorious day to fly!

have you set the position only flights button in FA?

I have no idea what the technical reason is...  but trying to watch one of Joe's flights on FA, I learned about this funky switch.  

Now I can follow all of my Mooney friends around the country...

Yes.

It was a broken search function. I don't know his tail number so I had to try and sort by departure and destination.

o69 is a great place. I try to visit every couple months to see friends in the area.

Nothing shows by avatars on my phone, but its all there on my tablets.

Hopefully you've owned it more than 12 months to avoid the 10% use tax when you bring it in.  I believe 12 months is the exemption time but aopa has details. 

If youve register it in a corp or llc you'll owe $800/yr in franchise tax

Also about 1.2% annual property tax

Thanks, Robert. I've previously owned airplanes in CA and am familar.

Use tax not an issue. I've owned the plane for almost 6 years.

My attorney tells me I won't owe the FTB squat for my LLC because it's domiciled in Colorado and the plane won't be generating income.

Property tax sucks but I'll more than recoup it with what I'm saving in hangar rent.

I'm not sure that's true about the llc. The state charges a franchise fee of $800 for doing business in California, they don't care what state you're registered in. What i was told by the FTB was that basing an aircraft in the state registered with the llc constituted "doing business" even if not generating income. Anyway, something you may want to consider

I hate to say anything because it sounds like you know your shit.  I am just amazed that hangars go for less in Petaluma than Colorado.  Of course, it you plan to leave it out you'd best factor that new paint job every few years into the Calculation.  That California sun is hell on paint jobs.

considering he was at the third busiest GA/BA airport in the US, it's really not. Centennial can rival VNY some days. It is top 25 for all types of operations.

I briefly looked for a hangar in Denver a year ago when considering jobs in the area...not that any hangars were available, but at the rents they command and the cost of housing...I don't think I could afford to live there and fly! Hangaring an hour from the city is a non-starter for me.

It's true, for a few reasons:

1. As peevee said, Centennial is a much bigger and busier, and is in an urban area, not a semi-rural one.

2. Hangars in Petaluma are city owned so you pay lower municipal rental rates. Centennial hangars are privately owned so you pay higher fair market rates.

I got a nice T-hangar at Petaluma. No way I'm leaving an Acclaim outdoors!

Going on 20 years outside in California. Paint doesn't look new but its not that bad. Could easily buy an extra Mooney with what I saved.
