GLD 90 Anyone? Looking to add Weather and Traffic

Anyone on the board have one of these boxes?

I would like to add weather and traffic to my a\c.  I spoke with 2 avoinics shops about going with ADS-B.  

Much to my suprise they both told me the same thing - stay away from this technology.

Both shops said get a garmin 330  for traffic and a handheld for (xm) weather.

I live in Floirda and coverage looks great.  What am I missing?

Aspen and 430 are being installed this week.  The a\c has an mx20.  Options?

I have the GDL69 for weather and plays on the GMX200. Works great. I like the big picture. Depending on which MX20 you have, the 330 will play traffic on it as well

The Garmin 330 does not gives you much traffic coverage in central Florida or the Bahamas. I have the Monroy Traffic-Watch+ that works everywhere check:  http://www.monroyaero.com/ATD300+Brochure.pdf For weather I have the XM/WX with a G396 that works on the ground all the way to the Bahamas.

While researching the GTX330 and its traffic feature I was astonished to find out that as the FAA upgrades radar facilities nationwide the new equipment will not be supporting TIS. I thought this was odd so I decided to do my own research and sure enough it's true. Here in Florida the first facility to lose TIS was Tallahassee. What's even more surprising is that the announcements started in 2005.

That is why I am suprised by the negative comments.  It seems like TIS is on the way out and ADS-B is on the way in.   I don't think I should invest in a technology that is fading into the sunset.

I think the local shops are saying there is a great deal of risk being on the bleeding edge.

Not sure what the middle looks like.

I have one of these boxes in my M20E. I fly out of Chino in Southern California. It works great in high traffic areas which is where I spend most of my time. I actually use the TIS display more then any other display on my 430 when I am in a high traffic area.

Does the GLD 90 have the ability to grab weather as well?

With the GLD90 and GTX330 you get weather, TIS, and XM radio displays on your 430. The TIS info and weather can be overlaid on the 430 moving map. The XM radio is always on and is controlled by the mute function.

There is also a remote available for a few hundred bucks that allows the passengers to control the XM radio function.

Just imagine if that system was reasonably priced to the point where everyone could afford to have it installed.

I guess we didn't get into this hobby to save money for retirement.

I paid about $4,600 for the hardware and installation. When compared to the alternatives, I considered it to a very reasonable price. The 696 was $3600 and the portable traffic warning box was $1200, plus I had to worry about cables and set-up every-time I flew. That's $4800 without the XM radio.

Also, in Southern California, there are no plans to do away with TIS.

i use a panel mounted 396 with xm weather, and a monroy atd 300. both work great, altho lately i've started getting a few false traffic alerts on the atd.

Rorythedog, I've been thinking about the Monroy (the company is located in the town where I live and my son went to school with Jose's kid) and wanted to know of you had the external antenna installed.

I had an MRX in my previous aircraft (have to buy a new one) though sometimes I had ghost warnings suddenly..Mostly it worked OK. Thinking of an XRX also...more $ but I guess more capable............

I just attended my first Florida Mooney Group fly-in two weeks ago at Sebring and had a blast. I should be flying up to Williston for the next one in a few weeks.

You guys are getting your GDL's mixed up. The GDL 69 is $2k used, $4.5k new and provides weather and XM services (100% subscription). The GDL 90 (about $8k installed and you have to have a series 200 display)is an ADS-B Data Link receiver that can display TIS-B and FIS-B weather and traffic data link, broadcast by the FAA. With the GDL 69, you pay for weather and music. With the GDL 90, you get traffic and most of the weather for free from the federal government. Any smart avionics dealer will tell you it way too early to buy a GDL-90. I have a friend (Baron diver)  who used one and said he had a continuous data stream from Wash DC to Sarasota. FAA Next Gen mandates are unclear, so your investment in a GDL90 corresponds. The GTX 330 transponder will display traffic hits for many years to come and it is THE BOMB!!
