The PSA test has turned out to be very unreliable in detecting cancer and the gold standard is still the digital exam, in which the doc can detect lumps and roughness. If your doc isn't doing it, maybe find yourself a new doctor.

Ultrasounds aren't used because (I believe) the organ is too deep for the sound waves to penetrate accurately. An ultrasound is used, however, during a biopsy (using a probe) so the doc can find the organ and locate the spot where tissue is taken from. It sounds a lot worse than it is, and in this case, I speak from experience.

The prostate exam is the finger probe up the anus (and you guys complain about me posting fat women photos). The physician is checking the size of the prostate. An enlarged prostrate could be an early sign of a problem.

The PSA test is falling out of favor due to a number of false positives that put a guy through unnecessary treatment. One physician once said that if a guy lived long enough, he probably die of prostrate cancer. Some prostrate cancers are very slow growing.

I'm hoping some new Mooney guy hasn't just joined Mooney Space and opened his computer to this 2nd page and it happens to be the first thread he reads on MS..lol..His thoughts,
