I'll have to fly to Delaware to have him teach how to use it, or spring for some good Memphis BBQ and get somebody over here to help me w/ the ins-outs of all of it. :)

You can start with the pre-study. Test in the morning:

Tom--

Why are you getting the STEC 30 with a GPSS? The Aspen 1000 Pro PFD has a GPSS built into the system.

I didn't get the impression that Tom is getting a separate box for steering. Even with the GTN750 connected to the Aspen he still needs the STEC30 to execute fly the flight plan  hands free.

Chris, This is too funny..I honestly have watched this twice. Once a few months ago and again this afternoon. I watched a few others as well that were posted. Great video :) I'm not ready for the quiz just yet.

When we first started the upgrade I was not considering the Aspen. When I finally got down to business and decided that 41M would be a keeper for a while I added the Aspen. This morning my avionics shop reworked the first quote to backout $ from the extra GPSS box bringing the cost of  the STec AP down some since we had the Aspen in the game plan now..

I know it gets confusing since I started looking at just upgrading the auto-pilot. Funny how 10K turns to 30k+ in heartbeat... I need to stay off this forum and away from all the fancy ideas..We always enjoy spending each others money..right?

Sorry for the late reply..I was busy checking the couch cushions for loose change :)

Hey Marauder, I'm thinking Aspen and/or Garmin ought to gift us a little something for our role in getting several former CBs to spring for their toys.

Let's all spin down to MEM, we frequent Tunica often and are going to start lookin at retirement homes most likely between Gulf Port and Tunica.

Now this would be a great idea for a Fly-In. Land at Tunica and take a short shuttle across the street.

Great video, Chris.

I'm curious -- what are all those round things in your panel?

In Jurassic Park terms, they are referred to as fossils.

That sounds about right although it assumes no snags in the installation.  I had mine a few years ago and it cost about $1500 in labor for the whole install.

I just got one quote back and it was 64 hrs of labor, about $5000.

Wow! So much for the "...engineered for easy installation..." and  "...unique design dramatically reduces installation time and cost... !

I had my GTN750 installed along with GMA35, GTX33R, M655, wired airplane with Bose power connector jacks for ship's power and cleaned out all unessesary wiring behind my panel for less than that!

Not all shops are created equal. I have the deposit on the new work with my regular shop for all the upgrades so there is no going back from here.

One of the shops I initially called looking for quotes finally called back today..it's been over a week and they are located in east TN. This was before I decided on the Aspen route, but at the time they were quoting the same project.

My local shop was about 13K for the Stec 30 w/ GPSS and new DG.

A east Tennessee shop finally called back today. It took over a week to get me a quote. They called today quoting the same parts, same work as my local shop, they quoted a crazy $25K for Stec 30 w/ GPSS and that did not include a new DG. His comment "STec thinks highly of their stuff". He was in the mid $30k for the Stec50 series.

Not all shops are created equal I guess. I should have known the guy in east TN would be high. When he called he spent 10 minutes telling me he was so sorry for the delay in getting the quote, they've been so very busy.

Shop, shop and compare..I want quality work and I won't beat a shop up as long as I get reasonable pricing and quality work, but wow, a $12K between shops for the same install.

So just a recap...the unit you purchased was the pro plus with SV and AOA for $8750 installed?  They show a list price of $14k for these units and your dealer probably paid $7k so he could still turn a profit.  I'd say a 40% discount and free install qualifies you as the CB best find of the month!

Sounds like I need to call my local shop or fly south to visit your dealer.

He didn't say he had SV,AOA

They already had the plane apart,so that saved $500.

They already making connections, probably just a net of extra few hours, if you spend $30K, you get a free installation of an Aspen!

If it sounds any better he did call me this morning and told me he miscalculated his pricing when he took off the GPSS module from the STec and we added the Aspen, he inadvertently applied the rebate discount as well. This calculated to be about a $4k mistake for him. He did say he would stand behind the price he quoted though. He asked if we could split half of the resale on some of the removed items and let him recoup just $2K of the $4K mistake. I'll be removing the Stec 30 Alt Hold, AccuTrak 2 and all components, PM6000 audio panel, JPI 830 and whatever else..He has always done me right and in return if he made mistake in his figures and it only takes $2K from the resale to keep him straight then I'd rather do the right thing. From what I've seen it looks like he treated me very fair. I'd want to do the right thing. I can PM you exact numbers of the breakdown, but pretty much posted what they were here.

It is the Pro Plus unit..They are showing a retail $13,995 then a $2000 rebate..Then whatever dealer mark-up is.. I'm sure between everything else I have him doing he is making up some of the difference on the other upgrades. Over the years of upgrades I'm sure he has come out far enough ahead even on a slim margin with this that he is still pays the light bills.
