Pictreed Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 I'm going through the POH about the interior lights...er, I mean the lack of. I found the fuel selector light but it may be blown so I'll look at it better Saturday. I turned it but nothing. It has a smokey look. It's probably not important since I can feel what tank it's in if I remember the big part is the back course. I can figure out how to turn the overhead lights on. I took the covers off and they look good but have not tested yet. I bought a hat bill light that has red and white lights so I'll keep it and some batteries. Tim Quote
Godfather Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 I would definitely recommend a volt meter purchase if you don't already own one. I would start at the switch and work my way down stream. Take your time and clean the contacts as you go. Quote
carusoam Posted May 5, 2016 Report Posted May 5, 2016 65s all have their dimmable lights originate from a single post under the IP. Their dimmer is in the ceiling, pretty far away. the two overhead lights that point at the IP has the other knob in the ceiling. ------ to find the post under the ip, find a lighted instrument or panel light first, it should be connected to a handful of other wires on that post. Does that help? Best regards, -a- Quote

Tim Tim, Here's the wiring schematic, if it helps. Clarence Quote
carusoam Posted May 6, 2016 Report Posted May 6, 2016 See #78 Clarence's drawing... All the lights being fed by a rheostat... The common post where all the light circuits come in are just after the rheostat... unfortunately the drawing doesn't give the detail of where on the plane some of these things actually reside. Best regards, -a- Quote
Pictreed Posted May 6, 2016 Author Report Posted May 6, 2016 Found it! Newbie! I was looking for a rheostat but only saw two bent control knobs on the ceiling. 1 Quote
Pictreed Posted May 6, 2016 Author Report Posted May 6, 2016 New problem. A garmin CDI is on the GNS 430 but has failed. It moves to a partial course deviation to the left 4 degrees and but the glide slope needle does not move. The VLOC and GPS lights alternate when the CDI button is toggled. Where should I start diognistics? Thanks in advance for all the help. Quote
carusoam Posted May 6, 2016 Report Posted May 6, 2016 You may get away with unplugging and spraying with an electronics cleaner. Use caution if you intend to use in IMC. Your life will depend on advice you got on the Internet. Not recommended... Seek pro electronics shop for that. Best regards, -a- Quote
Pictreed Posted May 6, 2016 Author Report Posted May 6, 2016 IMC is possible. So pull it and take to the shop? Quote
carusoam Posted May 6, 2016 Report Posted May 6, 2016 For that situation, I would start by asking my shop how to handle it. They may recognize what it is doing and how to handle it. Taking it out of the panel may not help the situation. It could be the radio. It could be a wire between the radio and the display. It is too important to have a hangar elf experiment with it. You would get a real funny feeling in IMC if it starts acting up again... PP logic, I am not a mechanic... Best regards, -a- 1 Quote

The reason I am asking is that on the ground, in my hangar, without GPS signal, my CDI will flag INOP until I have a valid signal AND I have a valid flight plan. If you are on the ramp, with the GPS having acquired signal, what does it do? In my case I am using an Aspen HSI and I get all kinds of INOP messages without valid signals. Just wondering if that is part of the issue. Quote
