so...the ADS B has started acting up again, the previous few flights IFR and VFR flights no worky. Today I slid the unit over to the side on the angle of the glare shield...It worked again. In the mean time I have ordered the external antenna to see if I can remedy this issue once and for all. The prescribed best practice for the stratus is the side window, I think theres just too much metal and other electronics in the way up on the glare shield.

I'll let you know what happens.

update...received my external antenna today. Flew in the clag  to KCON From KLWM at 4000. ADSB reception was flawless. Flew back to KLWM at 2000 VFR...Flawless again. Problem solved maybe? time will tell.

side note...the base of the overcast was 3000 during our flight. I was wearing foggles from the get go, but we were imc in cruise at 4000 feet. There was a guy in our general area talking to approach at our altitude VFR! It was a sort of broken overcast with glimpses of ground contact every fifteen seconds or so, but definitely IMC. My instructor and I were quite concerned about this pilot because there was absolutely no defense for us...he was headed to the same field, we can't see him, and we are converging. Never mind the safety aspect which we could discuss ad nausem...I expect more from my pilot brethren. There is a lot of rock at altitude around KCON so I'm sure he was trying to stay over it, but it was VFR down below and avoidable hills if you just familiarize yourself with the terrain.

A good backup for ADS-B weather at low altitude is Internet WX. I Have Garmin Pilot on my Samsung cell phone and WX works very well below 6,000ft or 10,000ft over high terrain. Ideal on approach were ADS-B coverage may be sporadic. It works well were there is no ADS-B coverage.

You must be flying over metropolitan areas most of the time because I'm out of range of a signal 90% of the time.

In the US I have not seen an area were I can not get Internet service on the ground or at low altitude. My service provider is ATT. I know of other providers were there is no service in many areas. Also the type of phone makes a difference. The newer ones are able to cope better with the mutual interference problem so they can work better in crowded cities like New York and Chicago.

I use AT&T as well and you and I both fly over the same geographic area. I often fly up to Tallahassee to visit my daughter at college and with the exception of flying over larger towns, my phone display "no service". Even when my wife attempts to text her with our ETA a half hour away, the message won't get sent until we are over some town.

Even flying over to gas up at Clewiston I don't get much service once I'm away from the Palm Beach area.

Do you get Internet on the ground at Clewiston? It could be an RF sensitivity problem with your phone. I found that you have to leave the phone on from departure to arrival to make it easier to log in into a cell. If a turn it off in the middle of the flight it takes for forever to re acquire. I guess it get lost due to the high speed of the plane. Attached picture shows weather at 8,000ft. from KRDU to KFXE. Unlike texting the Garmin Pilot application continually polls the area for an access window to download WX.

I don't know how you do it, but like I said, most of the time my and my wife's phone show "no service" while flying.

I had the same experience CARUSOAM had with an old Narco Nav 12 VOR receiver (set around to 110.00 mHz range as I recall) knocking out reception on both a Garmin 210 and a Skymap portable GPS. Old radios can cause interference problems we don't expect is also my experience.

Even new equipment can cause interference. I was experiencing an open squelch issue on my Garmin GTN on certain frequencies. It was caused by a newly installed JPI 900's remote annunciator. It was fixed by installing a ferrite ferrule on the annunciator's lead.
