Joe Zuffoletto Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Here's something you never see. It's an owl that somehow impaled itself on a Cherokee's antenna in a shade hangar across from my hangar. I discovered it today when I went flying. The owl was alive and alert, so it probably happened last night. Its left wing was completely impaled by the antenna. I called wildlife rescue and they came and removed it from the antenna. They told me that it will probably survive but will lose its left wing, so it will probably end up in a zoo somewhere. 2
bonal Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Poor guy I hope he makes it owls are very cool
kevinw Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Now that's bizarre. Nice work calling wildlife rescue! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Guest Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Joe, Glad that you found it before it died, sad to think it won't fly again. Clarence
carusoam Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Nice work, Joe! Those extra life points will be kept for you in bank somewhere. Best regards, -a-
ArtVandelay Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 I love the expression on the owl's face: "I can't believe I did that". i thought owls had excellent vision, including night vision? 1
201er Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Youch! Sounds like you did all the right stuff
PTK Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Poor fellow! Talk about bad luck! He's very lucky you showed up when you did Joe! Is that a case of CFOT? (Cherokee Frustrates Owl on Threshold?)

Seth Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Well done Joe. Glad you stuck around to ensure proper care was administered to our feathered friend. When a plane is parked and not in motion, does something like this count as a birdstrike as reportable to NASA/FAA? -Seth

DXB Posted April 2, 2016 Report Posted April 2, 2016 Nice save on the bird !! Glad the aluminum one is ok too.
Joe Zuffoletto Posted April 3, 2016 Author Report Posted April 3, 2016 I'm sad to report that the owl was euthanized by Wildlife Rescue. Its injuries were too severe to save it. Another flyer gone west.
Seth Posted April 3, 2016 Report Posted April 3, 2016 That's terrible news. Sorry to hear it. Thanks for keeping us informed. -Seth 1
