My neighbor posted this on the VansAirForce web site.  I think it's applicable  to us as well......

If the picture doesn't increase your curiosity about what might be lurking in your oil screen, nothing will.

I don't have a spin off filter, we pull inspect and clean the screen with every 25 hour change.

Mmmm, I'm pretty sure Vic is talking about the oil screen at the bottom of the oil sump....not the one up on the back of the accessory case on those engines without filters.  All the Lycoming engines have this screen, even those with filters.  Maybe some of the engine mechanics on here will correct me, but I think Vic is dealing with the "oil pickup screen".

For my 'C', pulling that lower screen is a "Boetch of a job" because it is so tight between the bottom of the sump and the firewall complicated by all the carburetor linkages.  This is why the screen gets "over-looked" on annuals.

The only way for me to get to that screen is to loosen the engine from the mounts to give me the necessary clearance between the engine and the firewall to get it out.  So maybe it gets over looked once in a while.  I'm in annual now so, I'll make a point to go take a peek.

Didn't realize you were Vic's neighbor.  My brother purchased the Sim's RV 6 from another of his neighbors a couple of years ago.   Vic did the prebuy and has helped him with it a few times since.

I've also saw governor gasket screens in similiar condition as they are never cleaned until the governor needs replacing.

But...what about a spin on oil filter!? Do you have one of those?!

That is the question!!

On a C the screen is easy to pull if you remove the cap from the screen tube then slide the screen tube out.

If you try to remove it connected you'll never get enough room and have to remove mount bolts NOT!

Just unscrew, pull the cap clear, grab the screen with fingers and remove the cap. Then pull the screen out (just enough room!

As mentioned the safety wiring is a b^&&**   Always a new crush washer.
