Guitarmaster Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 I went to the NOAA website to get the latest Skew_T charts and the page is blocked!? http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov Does anybody know what happened? I love that chart for predicting tops and icing. I will be very sad if it disappears forever. Quote
ArtVandelay Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 Don't know, the app also returns no data error. Quote
Robert C. Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 SPECIAL MESSAGE: GOES-13 Sounder IR data is not available. All products from GOES-13 (GOES-East) Sounder IR data have been halted and distribution has been stopped. Engineers are investigating the problem. per.... http://www.ospo.noaa.gov/Products/atmosphere/soundings/sfov/skewt/ http://www.skewt.aero/# shows graphs that fit my "out the window" look, but that may just be modeling. not sure. Guess we'll have to wait. Robert Quote
gsxrpilot Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 Can anyone suggest a good way to learn to use these charts? Quote

aviatoreb Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 I have always looked at skew-t AND area forecasts for idea of tops. Area forecasts are going away, and skew-t has disappeared? Quote

You can google "skew-t" learning and there will be several sites pop up. If you are going to OSH'16, Foreflight does a great presentation. VERY informative! My biggest take-away was between 0 and -12c, depending on the chart, you will likely have freezing rain since you need condensation nuclei to create snow. With no contamination, water begins to make crystals (its own nuclei) beginning at -12c. This small tidbit is HUGE. I have paid attention in my professional flying life, and I can predict, about 80% of the time, where the ice will be based on skew-t. Pretty cool for sure! When asked if skew-t was going to be offered in Foreflight, he was evasive. I suspect we will see that in a nearby revision. It's a great tool especially when trying to decide climb through an icing layer or if you will be on top before the freezing level. I hope it comes back soon!! 1 Quote
Deb Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 From: http://ruc.noaa.gov/forum/f2/Welcome.cgi/read/2455: Soundings down for several days Posted By: Bill Moninger <bill.moninger@noaa.gov> Date: 12-December-15 2044Z Yesterday (Friday) afternoon we discovered that excessive use of the interactive RAP/HRRR/RAOB/etc interactive sounding site (http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov) was causing the rest of our website to become unresponsive. Users could only intermittently receive RAP and HRRR data. Because many weather service offices and other forecasters rely on these models in their operational work, a management decision was made to temporarily shut off the interactive soundings. A quick test revealed that this shutdown enabled the website to promptly deliver our primary products, so we have shut down the interactive sounding site for the next several days. We are in the process of installing http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov on a separate (and probably more powerful) web server. We expect to have this new server up sometime next week. We'll notify this forum when the new server is up. We apologize for any inconvenience this sudden outage may be causing. In the meantime, please be aware that you can access pre-generated RAP soundings for many sites at http://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/soundings/Welcome.cgi?dsKey=rap_jet and HRRR soundings at http://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/soundings/Welcome.cgi?dsKey=hrrr_jet -Bill Moninger gxsrpilot: Scott Dennstaedt is well respected; he's now with ForeFlight. He has an aviation weather course at www.avwxworkshops.com. Also, try: http://atmo.tamu.edu/class/atmo251/book05soundings.pdf and: http://www.met.tamu.edu/class/atmo203/tut/sound/soundmain.html. Guitarmaster Posted December 15, 2015 Author Report Posted December 15, 2015 It's $10 now. Might be worth it. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk Quote
Marauder Posted December 15, 2015 Report Posted December 15, 2015 It's $10 now. Might be worth it. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk I signed up when the app was free and the developer gave us early adopters a year free. I forget the reason for the fee but at least it wasn't another Xavion disaster. I'm done with that dough boy. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
