TTaylor Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Bob, OK we have given you are hard time about curtains. If you really like the look, go for it. Personally I think today using pull down (or pull up) shades would be a much nicer look in a Mooney. Weight should be similar between shades and curtains. You can get them in different levels of blocking from complete to see-through. Tim Quote
MB65E Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 Agreed Bob! I think they are kinda classy looking. The only ones I have seen fall apart in your hand when you move them due to dry rot. If I could come up with bars I might think of sewing some up. The holes in my window frames are still there, however my "vintage plastic" probably won't support my classy shades. I'm not sure how often I look out the rear glass, but it sure would keep things cooler in the summer! It's still a free country, well almost! -Matt 2 Quote

Andy95W Posted December 10, 2015 Report Posted December 10, 2015 I hate to admit this publicly, but I'm kind of with Bob, if I can figure out a way to install curtains without feeling even older than I am. Would someone who currently has curtains please post a few pictures from the inside of the airplane so I can see how they mount and how they look? Thanks in advance! 1 Quote

These curtains are nearly new. 41 years old. That's what a hangar will do for you (and your curtains). 2 Quote
Piloto Posted December 11, 2015 Report Posted December 11, 2015 I installed the roll down shades that blocks the sun but allows you to see below. You can roll down as much you need without blocking the view below the sun angle. They retract by just pushing a button. Very handy and easy to roll down. I installed them using the plastic window cover screws. You can get them at Walmart. http://www.walmart.com/search/?query=Car+Shades&adid=22222222220207488226&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=b&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=31638557359&wl4=kwd-54439458679&wl5=9011891&veh=sem José 4 Quote

All in all, do you like having them, or do they tend to get in the way? Thanks again, Quote

All in all, do you like having them, or do they tend to get in the way? Thanks again, I'm just guessing the rods are thick walled aluminum tubing. I know a magnet won't stick to them. They are slightly flexible, but not flimsy. I'm not sure they are anodized, but that's the coloring. My wife and I use the ones in front to block the sun. We rarely carry passengers, so I have no idea of their utility in the back seat. They don't interfere with anything. I wouldn't say they are an important addition, but I like the fact that they were in the plane as "original equipment". They are kind of "retro" and fit with the rest of the plane; as mentioned, you don't see too many anymore. I thought the "hearse" comment was pretty funny. 2 Quote
Yetti Posted December 14, 2015 Report Posted December 14, 2015 For my 70s plane with the disco green paint job, I would have to do the beads curtains to stay with the theme and then maybe a disco mirror ball 2 Quote

glafaille Posted December 24, 2015 Report Posted December 24, 2015 Curtains are something I personally associate with OLD V-Tail Bonanzas, never noticed them on anything else. Wouldn't curtains hamper visibility? Seems unsafe to me if used on any of the front seat windows. I frequently use flexible, temporary, stick-on tinted window shade film to darken the window as needed and where needed. Found the material at Walmart in the automotive department. Cut to shape and place wherever you want, peel and stick in another place as the flight progresses. Also works great to protect the interior when forced to park on the ramp, just cut a piece big enough to cover the entire window. Roll them up when not in use. I admit that the film is not as stylish as other solutions previously suggested. Quote

apenney Posted July 16, 2019 Report Posted July 16, 2019 The rear curtains are useful to keep sun out on the ramp when I’m visiting another airport. I usually put anything in the backseat that I don’t want getting super hot. I’m considering adding a pair to the front - the bar is still in place but no curtain. I’m ok with the un-cool style...and these curtains seem a little more updated than the 60s era curtains I’ve seen. Maybe these aren’t original? Quote
