Is the S-tec heavier or lighter than a Brittain?

Assuming the basic Brittain wing leveler already installed adding GPS/nav radio tracking adds 2.5 lbs, DG tracking adds another 1lb and Altitude hold adds 5.3 lbs.

Best 9 lbs I've added. And my wallet didn't get much lighter.

Seriously though, I've seen pics of your bird! The only thing I have on you is a 1/2 pound and some extra room in back. Your's is far nicer than mine.

How about adding TN to a J? Nobody done this? Only downside seems to be the $30K price tag.

There are several flying TN'd M20Js but the company that holds the STC (M20 Turbos) is no longer a going concern. Tornado Alley Turbos has a TN STC for the IO360 in the Cardinal. I often wonder why they chose the C177 over the M20J.  There are more J models flying than C177RGs.  Maybe they figured Mooney owners were too cheap to upgrade an intercooled TN'd M20J would be a good thing.

The calculation should be:

160 kts/hr = 185 mph

94 gallons at 11gph = 8.5 hrs

Thus, range with ith 1 hr reserve:  7.5 X 185 = 1,387.50 statute miles

I stuck an extra number in there somewhere.

(or found a way to defy physics).

The turbonormalizing will work with the J model cowling with no cooling issues.  It will not work with a Lopresti cowling without seriously modifying the air inlet openings to make them larger.

The Tornado Alley guys bought the cardinal t.n. STC from a 3rd party then modified it to the latest and greatest turbo and intercooler. That system on a J would rock and turn 190kts at altitude all day long!
