I just bought a 1977 J model so I am a rookie regarding how all this works BUT I am an IPAD owner and was also trying to think of some way to mount it and be able to see it. Did you ever figure anything out? One option someone mentioned was a flexible boom mounted to the center floor pedestal on the right side, the IPAD attaches to the end of the boom and you can manipulate the boom and Ipad to move where you want. If you want to see it better you flex it up but if someone is sitting in the right seat it would greatly limit your options. Also, I use good reader as an app along with reader plates.com which is a free NOS service. so i get the NOS plates free but no enroute stuff. Any ideas how to get charts on the ipad including TAC for NY etc? I tried Sky Vector which is a good product but its just not engineered for an IPAD yet.

Many cheers!

I'm sold on ForeFlight.  It's pretty bullet-proof both pre-flight and inflight.  I use it for all enroute and approach charting; my iphone runs the same software and is my backup.  I just don't need anything more at this point. $75/yr for everything.  Once they have weather/TIS, I won't need my panel mounted 696!

I bought a RAM yoke mount off of ebay I haven't put it in the plane yet, but it works great on the kitchen stools CoolMoney mouth

I looked for the seller that I bought mine from - his wasn't there but another seller has a bunch for a buy it now in the 60 dollar range.  I can say that the mount is sturdy and has a solid attachment both on the yoke and the IPad itself...

one thing to note on the ipad is that when you use it while wearing polarized sunglasses you can only view the screen in landscape mode. if you try to view it in portrait the screen will look like it went dead. so if you plan to use it in a mount, be aware of this issue.

Oh - ditto on foreflight - works fantastic for preflight - my significant likes to track our path on the way as well - I've been to 9,500 and not lost the track - speed and altitude is relatively close as well.

I went with ForeFlight on my iPad. Used them on the iPhone previously. Currently, I don't mount mine (sits in my or my wife's lap), but will eval some of the ram mounts. It's a great device for going (or attempting) paperless for charts and approach plates. I'm slowly weaning myself off the paper subscriptions (with some exceptions).

Nice thing about foreflight - if you  buy it for the Ipad it covers the install on the iphone as well. now you have a backup to the backup!!Cool

I am another happy skycharts pro user.

For mounting, I bought the Griffin ipad "folio" case (very professional looking BTW), and simply flip that open, and clip the 'flap' end onto my standard kneeboard. The arrangement works really well until I need to do something else with the kneeboard, which is rare.

I would just like to add my endorsement of the use of ForeFlight on an iPad.  I find it extremely valuable for pre-flight planning, flight plan filing and inflight charting.  I find it well worth the $75 annual fee.

I recently returned from a coast to coast trip in my Mooney, including 14 legs, and I never had to refer to paper charts or paper approach plates.  Additionally, I had a three hour leg at 15,000' and the iPad performed flawlessly.  When I had a few questions for ForeFlight Support they provided timely and accurate responses to my inquiries.

I use a Steinheil AF screensaver on my iPad and I clip the iPad to my kneeboard.  The screensaver shows no apparent damage form the clip and it obviously prevents damaging the iPad screen.

Lastly, "No" I do not have any affiliation with ForeFlight.  I'm just a Mooney owner/pilot who is a satisfied ForeFlight/iPad customer.

I am going to special order the 24" floor boom (longer than the standard size commonly offered) and mount it from the floor.  I haven't seen anyone else try this configuration, so I'm curious to see if it will work.  I have the yoke mount, but don't like it (mostly because I have an Anywhere Map on the other yoke).

Thanks for the photo Ken.  Which mount did you use?  I received the iPad from my wife for Christmas and she knew it was the Mooney making me want it.  Subscribed to ForeFlight already and glad to see so many good reviews on here for it.  It looks great couch flying it and can't wait to use it bringing 45T home from the avionics shop later this month!

I used the Ram mount as well - though I have the yoke mount I went another direction.  After "cleaning up" the right panel I had a lot of clear area, so I mounted a ball base on the upper right side of the right panel.  The Ipad or for that matter any other Ram mount fits there nicely.  Given the proximity to the audio input it will double as an information platform or an inflight entertainment center for my better half.

I got an iPad for Christmas too. I have already put Foreflight on it and ordered the aluminum kneeboard for it. I'll do a PIREP when I get it and use it a bit. I'm not a big fan of yoke mounts and I also didn't want to block my view of anything else including the windows, so I'm going to try to replace my trusty old analog kneeboard I have always used and attempt paperless.  Laughing
