I think it depends - as usual - it always depends.

Some highways, like the ones around here, can be incredibly sparse with cars, and there is plenty of space between cars.  A rural superhighway throughway.  A packed LA freeway is the other end of the scale. Also obviously better to go in the direction of the flow rather than head on.  If it is a big divided high, I could see coming in, finding too many cars, and then choosing the grass between or the sides as a last second alternate.  At least help would be nearby.

Sure is..

I've always been concerned with telephone polls that are often found in the paralleling the road.  Damn hard to see from a few thousand feet above.

We had an amazing story about 50 miles east of me.  In January of 2013, a CAP plane landed on a road in the middle of a town, at night, when the engine quit, and no injuries to the crew, and very minor damage to the plane.  The pilot had flown for the Michigan DNR (Department of Natural Resources) for many years, doing fire patrol and I think wildlife studies.  But that kind of outcome flying at night.  He's got my respect!

Yeah, I hate telephone polling too. Very annoying ;-)

The new Garmin software update for the GTN's show them. Pretty slick!
