A Beech 1900 twin turbo prop went down just after take off from Tamiami airport. Pilot reported engine out problem and wanted to turn back. All four occupants killed. Plenty of open flat farm land to make a safe emergency landing. I think now my Mooney is safer than even twin turboprops.

By that logic, Jose, your Mooney is safer than almost any airliner other than 787. That one has not yet had a chance to crash. And it might be, however, maybe not with you at the controls. I prefer my pilots not to be so emotional...

The 1900 is a really easy airplane to fly on one engine since it has so much excess HP for climb, rudder boost and autofeather.  That thing will climb over 1200 FPM on one engine at that weight. Its certified and absolutely will perform on one engine at its maximum 17,120 lb gross weight. This plane was probably several K under that.

Byron,

Good luck with that one, buddy...Obviously we know you drunk Bob Hoovers blood, making you a special kind of pilot. What's 1900 engine out rate of climb at sea level? Are you telling me that a 1900 has a better power to weight ratio on one than a M20J? No, could not be.

The same kind of idiot that would wreck a 1900 after an engine out, is going to wreck a Mooney after an engine quits. The same kind of an idiot who will take off in IMC with 20 hours total of IMC in the last 9 years. The same kind of an idiot who escapes IMC to VMC and then dives back down again with no gyros.

Andy, calm down and take a chill pill.,.I feel sadly for the families and pray that the competency of those flying our machines become more proficient....luckily they killed no one on the ground at least I hope that's true...

670 fpm is the single engine performance specs of the 1900 according to the POH at gross weight, this assums ideal conditions..

Looks like only 4 on board with 500 gallons of fuel. That should have put them 3,000 or so below gross for this 19 seater. Hate reading this stuff...

Prayers for the family. No one really knows how they are going to react when the shit hits the fan. I had an engine out (fuel starvation) after only 55 hours of flying and managed to land on a country road, refuel and fly away. It wasn't my proudest day, but it taught me several life lessons. Fly fast snd fly safe. Troy

He hit a power line trying to set it down in a field.

That makes more sense. I fly out of there quite often and like Jose said lots of open fields and options at that airport, specially if you are taking off to the west.

There is no need to set it down in a field, the aircraft performs on one engine. The only caveats are mechanical failure, such as the prop failed to feather, a confirmed fire, or pilot screwed up.   This isnt an Apache with 150hp engines, its a turbine-powered airliner with 1279 SHP a side and an empty weight of 10,500 LB. It goes.

Nonsense.  I've thousands of hours in a 1900 and no fewer in single engine recips and I can assure you that I'd take the 1900 over any single engine, including a Mooney, on any day.

Everything is subject to failure or mismanagement.

It appears that the plane was on a steep climb since it achieved 1000ft agl 2nm after take off. The plane would had been at a low speed making it prone to loss of control. Witnesses on the ground indicated that they hear engine noise as it came down.

And what did I say? Stupid pilot tricks. 8 degrees nose up in turbine equipment. They made it to 1000ft. I'd like to see a Mooney do that with an engine out. All they had to do is level off, come around and land.

A Mooney at a 1000ft on this same scenario would have just landed on the parallel road to the south saving the plane and the passengers. Just common sense. No need for an ATP rating, just student pilot training.
