New DG for 67 F

Hey guys, thought I would plot my questions down here like everyone else.  Perhaps some of you more experienced guys could help me out.

 

My original DG is poop and parts are no longer available for overhaul.  I've attached a photo for your amusement.  

 

My PLAN is to update the panel to a more modern configuration as attached.  So, I had planned on updating the DG anyway.

 

 

I had gone back and forth about getting a G502A so I could easily add accu-flite if one came up, but I have figured out that I would really just be interested in the accu-trak.  Later, coupling a DG with a GPS might be nice, but by that time, I would probably be looking at HSIs instead.  So, this brings me to my current question.

 

I have not looked under my panel in great detail just yet, but wondering if any of you could look at my drawing and advise if the new placement would be problematic?  Can anyone recommend a particularly good DG that would fit and maybe have a non-autopilot bug, as its handy for remembering my navigation plans.. I've also seen the little bugs you can stick on there...   Oh yea, this has to fit with the frugal bastard crowd, of which I am a member.

My old 67F had the AN DG removed and a modern 3 inch DG installed in the same place. It fit fine.

Do you have a clock in the yoke or somewhere else on your panel? You have an electric compass drawn where a lot of panels would have a clock.

Here are a few of the problems I remember from a few years ago.

Be sure the tang is correct for your switch.

Check the depth behind the compass, there is an angled bar that limits depth.

Leave room for a lighting scheme, nulights work great but require a little extra spacing.

The sure the yoke bearing mounting screws are not in the way of the DG.

Add appropriate cut outs for instruments such as DG, altimeter and others not all use 4 mounting screws.

I have a digital clock on the yoke.

I'll try to get up in there with a tape measure.

Meanwhile, any recommendations on a DG if it fits?

If you are referring to that timer in your picture I don't think that meets the regulation for IFR.

I've still got some things to do before getting IR. One step at a time. Haha. I have the original yoke clock also under the timer. The timer has a digital clock also.

I don't think you are going to find anything that fits the opening for your current DG.  If you are thinking about swapping it out again at some point you might want to consider an overhauled unit.  Berkshire should have some.

I have one with a heading bug and autopilot output.  It worked when removed but has set a while so it may need a overhaul soon.  You could use it as just a heading bug and not hook up the autopilot output.  I can get it out tonight and send you a picture.  Best I remember it the face was clean.
