I am still looking for a Mooney and the G1000 interests me, coming from a glass cockpit in the Hawker. My question is what is the reliability and cost of repair when something goes wrong?

I fly a G1000 Ovation and happily have never seen anything go wrong. Can't recall any threads on Mooneyspace about G1000s breaking either.

ymmv of course

So, I'm fairly new to the G1000 that I got with the Ovation in July. While it generally works great, I did find (after the fact, unfortunately) that the Range knob on the MFD is non-functional.  That is to say, twisting it has no effect on the displayed range on the device. I can push it to activate the cursor and scroll around to select/create waypoints and the like, but I can't zoom in or out on the MFD.  It's a minor annoyance because I generally leave it set on Auto Zoom anyway, and I use enough waypoints in a flight plan that I can see far enough out. And I always have the ForeFlight/Stratus 2 system as back up to use for scrolling around to get long range weather, etc.

Garmin has a flat $1000 charge to send in the unit for repair, plus the shop time to remove and re-install it. I've decided to wait and see what Mooney comes out with for the WAAS/ADS-B upgrade path before I do anything about it.  Other than that, the G1000 has worked great for me and I love it.

Garmin offers a 3 year service contract for the G1000; there's an out of warranty charge of ~$550 - $600, and then the cost of the service contract (varies depending on what you go with). One can call Garmin for the specifics (866-739-5687), but it may need to be purchased through a Garmin avionics dealer.

I've been flying G1000's in a variety of planes for almost 10 years now. I have had an AHRS reboot but otherwise, no catastrophic issues. Biggest issue is that the knobs wear out and start to fall off. The reversion button once popped off in flight and sprung itself into the back seat.

Fortunately the AHRS issue was during VFR but its a bit concerning when the screen shows red X's and the words "hold wings level for 30 second" or something like that is shown on the screen.

Chances are you'll get flawless performance from a G1000; I've flown it for years first on a DA40 (G1000 launch customer), then the Acclaim, TBM850 and now on a Sierra modified citation 501...  That's 9 years without a fault on any of those installations, and except for the DA40, all of them have been WAAS, and all of them except the citation, have had the GFC700 autopilot.
