I switched to a new Dell Laptop with Windows 8.1 a year ago but could not get my old flight planning program to work on it.

Does any one knows of a free program that can be downloaded?

Duats. It's a little "old-school", but it'll get the job done. Also, if you're a member of AOPA, (not free, but just $40/yr.) they have a decent flight planning tool as well.

Flightaware does it all for you, shows cost based on leg lengths, wind, and shows altitude comparison. It doesn't assume the same speed and fuel burn for all altitudes, it actually has the database that is taken from the POH of a lot of Mooneys and aircraft in general.

Thanks for the tips guys. Skyvector is the one I was able to make it work. It has maps of the whole world and rubber banding on route line. Impressive for a freebie.
