bonal Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Plenty to do before I would get to the 201 mod and looking at the pics I think i would rather keep the access. Too bad they can't make an easy removal for the glass that would make it best of both. Quote
N601RX Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 The SWTA window has not been available for the last 4 years or so. I probably installed the last that was installed earlier this year. I got it from someone who had purchased it new several years ago and never installed it. The person who owned it lived close to Russell and new him well. Since Russell new it had never been installed SWTA agreed to transfer the STC to my plane for a small sum of money. He also said that he would not transfer the STC on a kit that had been previously installed. If the part 23 rewrite ever happens it would be easy to duplicate the SWTA install by purchasing a 201 window from any supplier and 201 retaining strip from mooney. The only other parts needed are just standard AN hardware. 1 Quote
N601RX Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Here is the access panels on the SWTA kit. It gives decent access . Quote
Sabremech Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 I've contacted SWTA about purchasing the non active STC's numerous times with no response back from them. Appears they aren't interested in parting with them or supporting them. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 How's that nose mod cowl coming Sabre? Hey, how about those parts numbers for the nose gear "tightening" you promised....? Quote

bonal Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Where did you get the lens stc/kit at? The lens is a LASAR mod and since I do my annuals there it was put in as part of the work we did. Quote
philipneeper Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 I had the cowling piece and stc given to me as a present from my IA. Guess I will use my A&P and install it 1 Quote
Sabremech Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 My little Mooney goes into R&D airworthiness in January. That's when there's no turning back as I mod my plenum and cowling. Been busy with another STC project and then wanting to fly my airplane before tearing it apart again. Scott, refresh my memory as to whether you have the Lasar nose truss etc! Thanks. David Quote
Andy95W Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 David- I'm going to tear into my nose gear assembly in a few months with an oversized bushing and (probably) sending out my steering horn for rebuild from LASAR. Do you have some more suggestions beyond that? Quote

David That all sounds great David. Understand completely. Look forward to seeing photos/hearing about cowl mod as it progresses. You were going to give me the most common bushings etc. (#'s from Laser) as you were going to replace and shim your nose gear. Yes, I have the Laser brass unit installed. A&P said he noted a little "play" in nosegear at last annual (January 2014) and I thought I would replicate the common wear parts that you were re-doing...Easy to order with numbers. You had "promised" to forward by PM...Others could certainly benefit so "outed you here" If too busy, no worries I can get with Laser directly. Others have input/numbers/schematics from service manual...Bring 'em on. Scott Quote
Sabremech Posted December 10, 2014 Report Posted December 10, 2014 Hi Scott, well now that I'm outed, I can get those part numbers! I didn't do as much to my nose gear as I had planned. There's always next year or next annual. I'll work on the numbers for you! Not doing anything special to the gear other than replacing worn bushings and re-shimming to remove as much play as possible. David Quote
BigTex Posted December 10, 2014 Report Posted December 10, 2014 I have to say that I went to Don Maxwell's to have the 201windshield installed and was basically talked out of it due to access issues to behind the instrument panel. Due to the angle and location of the 201 instrument panel, you will not gain the same access they have. Don walked me around his hangar and showed me several conversions. Because of this, I went with the one piece non-201 windshield and couldn't be happier. Do your du diligence before you drop 8-10 AMU for this mod. 1 Quote

Conrad Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 Speed and fuel efficiency are the other side of the coin though. I don't know that I'd prefer purchasing a plane with the 201 windshield on it, but if I had avionics the way I liked them (and some money fell out of the sky) then... speed and fuel efficiency are why we're all here, no? Quote
BigTex Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 Speed is good but being raised by an Aeronautical Engineer that specialized in support & maintainability, easily access to the back of the instrument panel is pretty important to me. So removing what I consider as a really nice feature doesn't make much sense just to gain a few knots. That being said everyone has to make their own decision on this mod... I choose not to do it. 1 Quote
Sabremech Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 As an A&P, the smaller panels I have with my 201 windshield are more than adequate to access those few items mounted high on the back side of the firewall. I can count one time in the almost 5 years I've had my Mooney that I needed to access something behind the instrument panel. The aesthetics are just as important as the speed for me. David Quote
Marauder Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 This is a picture of the little panel you can remove on the SWTA mod. Enough together your hand down it. Quote
toomanyswitches Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 Does the cowl enclosure mod actually keep the CHT's cooler than without it? In summer our average temp here is 35 - 40degC I would be looking at this more for cooling than speed. Quote

In summer our average temp here is 35 - 40degC I would be looking at this more for cooling than speed. My general answer is "yes" but I can't give you a definitive "how much". I was using a GEM 602 (doesn't record temps) when the lower cowl enclosure was installed. I believe the summer temps were running in the 340 to 350 range on hot days. I had a JPI 830 (records temps) installed last year and the temps are running in the 320 to 330 range on hot summer days. Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 FWIW: I have an uninstalled LASAR cowl enclosure - anyone want it, give me a shout, no reasonable offer refused. I have many of the LASAR mods already and love each one, just too lazy to install the cowl enclosure! Quote
bonal Posted December 14, 2014 Report Posted December 14, 2014 So my question is for those that have replaced the 2 piece windshield with a 201 or any type of 1 piece what kind of speed increase did you get Quote
