Do you need an overhaul? That means regrinding the blade surfaces. You can have it IRANed to replace seals, fittings, repaint with new decals, etc., and save the blades unless they need to be remilled around the edge or resurfaced on the front.

Yeah, they need to remilled.  There's a rock scrape on the back of one that needs to be cleaned out.  Also, the last time it was overhauled was 1997.  It's had two mid service checks, but it's time for the overhaul.

Strongly recommend the MT prop.  Is the same price point, is lighter than the metal props.  Have one on the 231, best mod ever, bot better TO and climb with no reduction in cruise performance.  You should at least check it out.

How much is an MT ?

I had in mind about 13,000 for an MT, about 8,000 for at 2 blade hartzell

I paid in between those prices...they offer discounts at the major shows typically, or just call and ask. I've seen ads that they have some in stock over here...I had to wait months to get mine.

Gentleman,

Thanks for all of the replies and information. So here's the story with the old prop. It was last overhauled in '95. We wanted it overhauled vs IRAN, even knowing this could be the out come. Both blades were worn beyond limits, width and thickness. The hub needed piston and bearings. I considered new blades, but they are $5000.00 and the hub still needed to pass all the other inspections. (The prop shop stopped their inspections when they found the bad blades.). I looked for used blades, but I'm reluctant to go this way because I'd still want them overhauled, and run the risk of them not passing. So when you add that all up, it doesn't make sense to go with the old prop.

It seems to me that the best option for the J is the Scimitar Hartzell. The MT would cost $4500.00 more for some better climb performance, I don't see that as a real benefit. I should see that from the Hartzell anyway being that it's new technology.

Anyway thanks for all your help.

Fly safe,

David

Costs and delivery depend upon what you are buying. Everything costs more and takes longer than expected. A firm quote will keep things in control.

Did you actually call the MT distributor and get a "real" price from them?  The price delta won't be that much unless they've really raised prices.

I did email MT, this was the price they quoted and that is "The FBO Price". They also said it would be around 4 weeks for a spinner.

If they don't have the prop in stock on their shelf, they should not be making any mark up on it per an earlier thread, in fact you may be able to convince them to give you one for free. Certainly worth asking.

In some K's you can reduce or remove the "charlie" weights in the tail so your useful load increase is very significant.

Okay, I have an MT Prop on my 231 and could not be happier with it. However, what are Charlie weights? How much weight do they take off? And how do I find out if I can remove them?

Thanks in advance,

W

Charlie weights were sometimes added in the tail of K models to move the cg aft. Installing the MT moves it aft also, so the weights can possibly be removed.

W,

Check your POH in the W&B section. If you have them, they will be listed there...

Long Bodies have a short stack back there. They come in three sizes 6.2, 13.4, and 19.7 pounds. They are located at 209.5 inches.

How's that for an answer to a question you didn't ask?

Best regards,

Get a second opinion.

Unless that prop is an 8-10k hr prop, in my opinion you would have to have been taken off in a rock pit, an tied it down on a ramp somewhere at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico

They are still your parts: Get another shop to tell you it's scrap.

Agree completely. If you're planning to go the Hartzell route, certainly ring up Mike at the factory. I've worked with him on a couple of occasions, and you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone with a deeper, more detailed and intricate knowledge of the physics and performance of propellers than him.

I got a quote from MT here in Europe a month or so ago (when faced with a $5,000 quote and 150 days for a new spinner assembly for my Hartzwll Q-tip). The correct pro for a J is the MTV-12-B / 180-59b and the associated spinner is the P-285-1-A....pricing in Europe is €8,250 for the prop and €1,150 for the spinner ex-factory....this is approximately $11,130 plus shipping... I don't know how that compares to the US pricing...

Needless to say I am staying with the Hartzell for now....but if I need a new prop I will definitely go for the MT 3-blader...
