Wildhorsesracing Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 How many times has this happened to you? I needed a new generator belt and since we had to take off so much of the front of the plane that I decided to upgrade to an alternator. http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/36082-/ http://mooneyspace.com/gallery/image/36081-plane-power-voltage-regulator/ It was a fairly simple thing to install, I'll let you all know how it turns out next week when I test fly her. 2 Quote
N601RX Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 I keep a second belt semi installed. Just cut the safety wire that keeps it out of the way and slip it over the pulleys and tighten. Quote
tony Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 I do that too, If you still have your prop off, I would suggest doing that. Quote

The only bad part is that the spare belt ages at almost the same rate as the one you're using. By the time I decided to install the spare, it wasn't in all that great shape! 1 Quote

N601RX Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 I'll take one today. You basically pull it up tight around the bottom side of the case snout and then pull the other end up toward the engine lift point. A couple of adel clamps will also help secure it. It may not be the best of shape in several years, but should still get you back home. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 Has anyone ever had a belt break? I haven't in 4500 hours of mooney ownership. I've replaced it a couple of times when I had the prop off because it looked a little tired. 1 Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted October 19, 2014 Author Report Posted October 19, 2014 Has anyone ever had a belt break? I haven't in 4500 hours of mooney ownership. I've replaced it a couple of times when I had the prop off because it looked a little tired. Me neither, I usually keep an eye on mine and replace it whenever it starts to show some age. This one was installed in 1985 and was starting to crack. Changing it whenever you see any age is cheap insurance. Quote
MB65E Posted October 20, 2014 Report Posted October 20, 2014 I wasn't going to bring it up but I've replaced more props, front crank seals, and alternators than belts. I have not had a single belt failure. I think this was just somthing passed down over the years, possibly created when belts were as they are today. Now slinging belts off the back of old 182's... That's diffrent. -Matt Quote
carusoam Posted October 20, 2014 Report Posted October 20, 2014 Something changed with belt manufacturing prior to the single belt used on cars today... My '87 Pontiac was known to toss a belt. The 90's version probably still has the original single belt on it with 180kmi on it. Best regards, -a- Quote
1964-M20E Posted October 20, 2014 Report Posted October 20, 2014 Good move the Plane Power alternator is great. 1 Quote
MB65E Posted October 20, 2014 Report Posted October 20, 2014 Wildhorse- speaking of belts, what belt did you end up using? The gates belt P/N listed in the kit was the wrong size for me... The stock Lycoming belt didn't fit either. I remember several trips to the wall of belts at O'ryelys. The STC allows the use of Gates green stripe 9xxx series belts. -Matt. Quote
Wildhorsesracing Posted October 21, 2014 Author Report Posted October 21, 2014 We had the same problem - the Gates 7335 belt didn't fit so we went with a 7330 belt. I felt like Karate Kid today "Prop On, Prop Off, Prop On..." Quote
philipneeper Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 I do that too, If you still have your prop off, I would suggest doing that. how do you do that? Pictures? Quote
tony Posted October 22, 2014 Report Posted October 22, 2014 you wrap the belt around the bottom of the front housing of the engine and tie it up to the lifting strap on the top of the engine. If mike doesn't post a picture, when I go out to the hanger this weekend, I'll take a picture and post it. Quote
