 My AME wrote a standing Rx to be placed on file at a local Home Health supply... .

 

My first thought is:  I should ask my AME for one of these too.

My second thought:  Wow, our country is really messed up when you need a prescription for oxygen.

 

I'm off to read about little Timmy now.

Hi,

Since I don't have an oxygen refilling provider at my local airport and it is expensive and a hassle to fly to a nearby airport where the have, to pay the exorbitant 75$ of refill and 20$ of landing fee each time I need to fill it up, I have decided to set something up in my hangar.

After contacting several O2 providers in the region, I have found couple of them that actually can do delivery to my local airport. Their business is usually supplies O2 to welder shops or medical clinics. According to both, their medical grade O2 should be better or as good as the O2 I'm getting from the other airport.

I have absolutely no knowledge of the different grade of O2 when refilling, can someone point me to the right direction. I obviously don't want to put my life or those of my passengers in any undue risk.

I'm fully equipped now with O2 pulse oximeters and spare emergency tank for 2...

Go to your local dive shop.  O2 is O2.  Just make sure you get oxygen not "air"

The dive shop should have an analyzer that you can use to test the % of O2.   It is very common with Nitrox mixes.  If they don't have this, go some where else.

I know it's probably been beat to death and I should probably go back and read all of the posts, but nowadays O2 is O2 - it ALL comes out of the same tank and it's been that way for many years. Aviation O2 needs to be dry so that things won't ice up when it's cold and medical O2 needs to be moist so it won't dry out the nasal membranes - that's why they bubble medical O2 through water-filled humidifiers. For those of you who subscribe to Aviation Consumer there's an excellent article on this subject in the Feb 2004 issue called "Roll Your Own Oxygen" and Dr. Bruce Chien, over on the AOPA "red board" also has a "sticky" on one of the forums.

wow, talk about an amazing find, I went to a little medical device boutique today near my work and they have a whole setup to fill up tank with Medical grade O2, total cost for my 22 cubic foot tank was 26.50$, tough to beat that at that price...

My acclaim type S buddy and me (old J), have sucked in about 5 full size bottles worth of O2.

He has a turbo....I'm pretending.....still good stuff above 10k or lower at night....

Yeah, but how many flights or hours of flights, according to the manifacturers, if you use the mask, you are using 4 times more than the cannula, but then again, over FL180, you have no choice... I have not yet gone over FL180 since I'm not rated IFR, but looking forward doing it with a friend CFI soon!!!
